The ps3 reformats any hard drive you put in your ps3, even if it is already formatted. Basically, it swipes every hard drive before use. It would swipe his hard drive if he did that and he would lose his data on it.

Yes. I'm surprised it even recognized the external drive in the first place. Mine didn't until I reformatted it or I would have made the same mistake. Sadly, some of my data was corrupted(found out was freaking Gran Turismo 5 install data crap) after I deleted many of my games(not saves). I literally had to redownload everything. I guess I have unlimited internet because I didn't exceed my bandiwdth limits despite downloading like 50 gigs in a week.
