It will be very sad when the most rabid fanboys get more likes than reasonable posters.

I mostly don't car whether we have one or not but if I had to choose I would say yes, add a like button. The worst that can happen is it turns out to be a rather bad idea (which is very unlikely IMO) and you could just ax it later.

It gives him a sense of having a less valuable opinion.

Let's say that he's having a long discussion with another user who disagrees with his opinion, and each post that he makes receives no like while the opponent keep receiving at least five. That would make him feel less secure about expressing his opinion.

It's like having an audience yelling 'Boooo!' at you while you try to have a discussion with someone.

But if said user is having a good enough discussion with the other user and is using valid points etc, the is no reason he also would not get likes for his posts.

Yes there is. Just because an argument is valid that doesn't stop it from being unique, or against the great majority's opinion.

In that case, he is going to have alot of people posting comments in his thread telling him off anyways. So he is going to feel the same even if the was a like button or not.

That's not true. A lot of people read through the posts and notice that their opinion has already been expressed. Then they avoid entering the discussion altogether since there wouldn't be any point in doing so. And then there is the lurkers who usually don't post anyway.

By introducing a like system though, you also introduce an interactive audience to the discussion. That will have a great effect on the debates. For the worse.

There seems to be a small majority in favour of the like button so far.

Definitely against it.

It's still a bad idea Kantor. Let's keep some level of self respect and not have a like button.

Also even if it was a good idea it would never get done.

I don't think so. I would waste all of my time to see if anyone was "liking" my jokes instead of posting. This would be a good thing if you don't like my posting or my jokes so there you go...

Like buttons of thumbs up is okay. dislike buttons or thumbs down is stupid because mostly idiotic people misuse it to troll or make other people angry.
I mean if someone says something that is a FACT Its ones own problem if one doesnt like it so EITHER come up with useful critisizm or stfu.

The only thing DISLIKE creates is anger nothing else. Because even if you do something good there is always 1 person that doesnt like it or is angry that he wasnt the first to post it or whatever.

So LIKE why not? but there is no need for a dislike button.

P.S. LIKE could also be considered THANKS there is alot of forums where you can THANK someone.
