Forums - Gaming - Sony is admitting they copied super smash bros

I thought they started work on it in the 80s....

it would be funny if other games had tags from other franchises. i haven't seen it before but that doesn't mean it hasn't been done

I think every company should have a SSB game

I think a new genre has to be created specifacally for games like smash bros. How many copies have we seen already..

My fists? What are you talking about?

I have read that thread. I think I might have even posted on that thread saying exactly what I am saying right now.

Since we haven't seen the whole game, you can't accuse it of being a 100% carbon copy, it will most likely have features that seperate it from others in the genre. effectively shitting on it before it's even out of the blocks is unfair and unjust but a common attitude on the internet sadly.

Nobody shat on it. It's clear from what we've seen and what we know that it is a 96% carbon copy. That isn't bad per se, once you're over it. What's bad is people denying the truth at hand, and embellishing. There is nothing more irritating in the gaming community than that specific attitude. We need more neutrality in general.

The elements you mentioned were discussed in the thread, so there is nothing ambiguous here. There are fundamental point-ranking differences, but much of the rest is 1 to 1. If you want inspiration, look at the other videos in the thread (power stone, smash compared to outfoxies), but PABR is to Smash what Palom is to Parom, i.e. a twin.

So whether it's released or not, at this point with what we know about it, is not unfair. It's actually quite logical.

This is the bit I'm confused about.

How can you say it when you haven't seen EVERYTHING the game has to offer. All you saw was a demo at E3, which is just the same stuff we've seen on GTtv so effectively it's just the same demo over again.

People shouldn't be dismissive of things after 1 glance.

Otherwise I could easily accuse Little Big Planet of being a Mario Rip off but it's clearly so much more.

I could say Soul Calibur copied Street Fighter because both games feature people fighting but that's really a stupid thing to do.

I could easily accuse Modnation Racers of being a Mario Kart Rip-Off but it's got its own qualities

I could also accuse Shift of being a me too o Gran Turismo 5

I could easily accuse the WIIU Propad of being a rip off of the 360 pad but it offers MUCH more

I could also accuse NSMBWii of being a little big planet ripp-off but clearly that's not true

I could also accuse Horizons of being a Test Drive Unlimited carbon copy but again without seeing much, I can tell it will be different

This list is literally endless my advice, wait for the game to come out fully and then see what it offers before calling it a rip off

PS One/2/p/3slim/Vita owner. I survived the Apocalyps3/Collaps3 and all I got was this lousy signature.

Okay, since we're here, let's chew the fat. I'll take the time to explain.

How can you say it when you haven't seen EVERYTHING the game has to offer. All you saw was a demo at E3, which is just the same stuff we've seen on GTtv so effectively it's just the same demo over again.

It is the same demo, I will not deny that. I recognize the hydra and the players from last time, the stage seemed darker, but that might just be lighting, so probably same stage too. But to say that's all we have, as a smash fan I can tell you, that's really all we need. I would be very hard pressed to discover much more differentiating factors after that.

People shouldn't be dismissive of things after 1 glance.

It all depends on the glance. The demo was more than we need to argue, but some are more experienced than others, maybe the less experienced need more. I don't, the vid gives me all the details I need.

Otherwise I could easily accuse Little Big Planet of being a Mario Rip off but it's clearly so much more.

There are significant differences between Mario and LBP even if at first glance, even with just one set of screens one could tell the difference. It's not the same here. They look, and now by the vid, play nearly identically, from the rolling to how you rebound off walls and other such details (list is in thread).

I could say Soul Calibur copied Street Fighter because both games feature people fighting but that's really a stupid thing to do.

It is a stupid thing to do since by that shitty metric you could say that Street Fighter copied Smash Bros despite SF being created first.

I could easily accuse Modnation Racers of being a Mario Kart Rip-Off but it's got its own qualities

I haven't studied that one, don't really enjoy Mario Kart anymore and don't care about Modn Racers.

I could also accuse Shift of being a me too o Gran Turismo 5

Idem

I could easily accuse the WIIU Propad of being a rip off of the 360 pad but it offers MUCH more

It is a rip-off, why deny it? It was done to them repeatedly, it's time for payback.

I could also accuse NSMBWii of being a little big planet ripp-off but clearly that's not true

That would be an insane thing to say by any metric.

I could also accuse Horizons of being a Test Drive Unlimited carbon copy but again without seeing much, I can tell it will be different

Is Forza a GT rip-off? Very likely (I'm not familiar with Forza), but there's just so much variation possible in a realistic auto sim. The same can't be said about a fantasy fighting game (as we know from all the fantasy fighting games created this far). But this point I'll concede is arguable, as even in a realistic auto sim, you can target modded cars in the underground racing scene, or you can go with top-end cars like GT. So yeah, it could very well be a rip-off.

This list is literally endless my advice, wait for the game to come out fully and then see what it offers before calling it a rip off

My advice, as I said, look at things at face value especially when you have all the evidence you need, and stop embellishing, please. There is nothing inherently wrong in ripping off, it's only when it's done constantly and it looks almost like a total lack of originality (Sony) (EDIT: coughs aren't even needed) that people get called out for it.

Just saying it as it is. Don't taze me bro

The thing that people hate about me here is that I'm a pain to Nintendo fans, and I'm a pain to Sony fans, because I say things as they are, no BS.

The reason I picked those games is because they all fall under the same genre and are very similiar when you strip them down to the bare esscentials.

e.g mario and LBP 1. lots of platforming hi-jinx, when you look deeper, LBP has lvl editting and plays differently.

Shift and GT5, both feature realistic cars and lots of driving. Shift has a greater emphasis on "fun" and takes liberties with its take on realism (e.g rewind)

clearly from your comments, you haven't really experienced things as indepth as you should have to notice the intericate differences things can offer.

You say the propad is a ripoff of the 360pad, which it's fair to say at face value. but when you look deeper you will see the propad has gyromovements which the 360 one doesn't. This is the EXACT point I've been making. You also accused Forza of being a GT rip off eventhough you admit you've yet to experience both first hand. You shouldn't be dismissive of things at facevalue.

You use the example of the twins from Final fantasy. That's another example of my point, you see two identical twins and accuse them of being the same person not putting into consideration that they might have different personalities and different things to offer.

This goes back to my arguement, BR might be exactly the same as SSB at face value, unless you delve deeper, you won't see those differences.

I understand Adjascent, and they are good examples, but as I've been trying to tell you, they don't come close to the level of similarity that PABR and Smash has. I won't discuss this point anymore because we'll just have to wait till you get it in your hands to see that I was in essence right. I may not be able to argue other games (Forza vs GT), but Smash I feel very comfortable arguing, as well as fighting games in general, I also went over the topic alot, and created a thread for it, listed the ins and outs, so I'll just say I'm confident time will prove me right.

clearly from your comments, you haven't really experienced things as indepth as you should have to notice the intericate differences things can offer.

There are so many examples I can follow like LBP vs Mario and fighting games SF vs SC that you don't need to go so far, I'm not a racer fan.

You say the propad is a ripoff of the 360pad, which it's fair to say at face value. but when you look deeper you will see the propad has gyromovements which the 360 one doesn't. @Forza. As I said, idk. I know little about it. I've only owned & played Gran Turismo 3 in that genre.

@propad. I didn't need to mention the differences (I was very well aware of, having watched the Nintendo Direct) because they don't deny the fact that it's a rip-off, at face value. It looks and feels much like a 360 controller. Why did I not say a PS3 controller? Why did you not? Because the differences were that the PS3 doesn't not have the 360 form factor, while the Pro does. It's a rip-off for what is most visible to the eye. The differences, we're aware of them (I am at least). I don't need to experience it first hand to go over this with you, I know you see why I'm saying this.

You use the example of the twins from Final fantasy. That's another example of my point, you see two identical twins and accuse them of being the same person not putting into consideration that they might have different personalities and different things to offer.

It was just a metaphore, don't take it too seriously. What I was trying to say, in essence, is that PABR is not just another brawler (which has much leeway and room for variability), but rather a clone with minor differences. (See thread for more on this)

This goes back to my arguement, BR might be exactly the same as SSB at face value, unless you delve deeper, you won't see those differences.

Your point is valid (and I know what you mean), but it doesn't apply in this case, like I said.

EDIT: Adjascent, I'm starting to see what you mean, so let me offer a counter-point.

The physical differences between identical twins and the physical differences between two non-twin siblings are apparent. From a presentation point of view, and in terms of how the objects physically behave and are controlled, PABR looks nearly identical to Smash. Under the hood, some things are different. But in the end, the similarities overpower the differences, in my view. It isn't an exact clone, but it clearly is a rip-off (as different as those two terms can be).

I'm not entirely sure why people think copying other games is so bad.

99% of games out there start with "this or these games are our inspiration. What did they do right and what can we do better?"

Copying for the sake of doing something better and maybe even a little different from then the original it's a good thing.

Copying for the sake of copying to try stealing some marketshare is useless.

All stars battle looks like the second option imo.

I somewhat agree.  Not-so-much in the copying is a bad thing, but more in that it will be the worse of the two (just my personal guess).  I assume Sony will add some of their own flair to the game (and I believe we've already seen some of that with how they talk about the stages, I would be willing to guarantee it has better online multiplayer) so it will not be a carbon copy.

I'm actually relieved they're honest about copying the game.  I know some reason people keep trying to condemn them by saying they even have copies of the game in the office but I would be a lot more worried if they weren't so outright with their plan and tried to say no, it's original, I sweat!  Playstation (and even Microsoft) fans have been saying for years they would love a Smash Bros with Sony properties and that's exactly what Sony is giving those fans.  Can you really fault them for that?

No, not really. You have a point, they're doing a good fan service, even tought gaming wise this game is not interesting for me.

$100 says it's better than Super Smash Bros but gets poor reviews and tons of hate for being "a knockoff"

100$ says it's crappier than Smash Bros and gets poor reviews and tons of bla bla bla.

Reason why I think it'll suck: the % system is stripped. So, characters don't bounce higher and higher as they lose health (like they used to). You now kill with specials rather than with skill. It's gonna be weak. But I'm still getting it.
