Forums - Sony - Almost confirmed, PS3 to receive a price cut to $199.99 at e3.. and a new greatest hits lineup

Everyone on gaming forums was talking about the xbox 360 and the upcoming wii/ps3.. back in early 2006.. but in the real world.. the playstation 2 was still selling like crack, and was selling by far the most video game software out of any video game device without argument..despite the nexgen console being in the market..

To answer both OP questions, no and no. PS3 will finish 3rd this generation in sales. Nintendo will be the first to release a next-gen console, it will have a big lead by the time the other next-gen's hit the stores.

what if the ps3 ends up finishing 2nd? How would u feel about ur definite prediction?

That depends when you define "finish" is. Finish could mean until the next gen arrives. Finish could mean when the consoles are discontinued.

I personally believe you "finish" the second the next gen comes. I mean the PS2 is selling today, but many argued its battle was over in Nov 2005 when the 360 launched.

who would u consider to be included in this.. many.. considering when the xbox 360 launched, the playstation 2 outsold it it's first year by a landslide.. and I believe the ps2 also outsold the 360 it's 2nd year by a landslide too..

but thats irrelevant because the PS2 was a competitor to the Gamecube and Xbox. It was more like 360 was outselling the as yet unreleased PS3 then it was loosing to the PS2.

Point is though that if PS3 doesnt take 2nd place when the Wii U releases or if were really playing fair, when the next Xbox/PS4 releases, then it is considered that it finished last, despite it still being on the market.

The spotlight essentially moves on and where the big 3 stand at the moment the spotlight moved is how they are remembered.

There is no such thing as playing fair though.. fact of the matter is people will remember the lifetime sales of a console not when it ousold x console.. last gen was over when most game developers moved over to current generation consoles, the playstation 2 was still receiving far more ip than any other video game system in 2005.. and was the best selling system in 2005, and I believe 2006 as well..

Ok just saying any victory will be diminished in scope the more time goes by, even more so if the next gen arrives, especially given how MS and Sony performed last gen compared to now.

Xbox: Best hardware, Game Pass best value, best BC, more 1st party genres and multiplayer titles.

When next gen systems launch is when people try to justify placement. Down the road lifetime sales is all that matters. If it still sells, it still sells, and is still a system from that gen.

Before the PS3 everyone was nice to me :(

This. And if after a certain date some systems can still sell decently and others stop, it's not a problem of the ones still selling.

The PS2 is still selling so its still outselling the Gamecube and Xbox. its fact.
IF the 360 or PS3 outsells the Wii in the long term ( i dont think so) then then one of them will have won this gen. it sold the most.
a Gen doesn'd end because you brought a new system. i know people who still only have a PS2 and are still playing in that gen... it isnt over.

I would be very surprised if this happened, and even if it did my prediction right now is the right one to make based on the 360's current lead and habit of selling well during the holiday season.  Also, I agree with other posters that it's lifetime sales that matter; this gen's sales don't stop just because the next-gen systems hit the stores.  I should've stated that differently than I did.  I was assuming sales for the current systems will drop off a lot after the next-gen comes out, none of them continuing to sell a ton and have huge legs like the ps2.

lol "confirmed" price cut didn't happen

Been away for a bit, but sneaking back in.

Gaming on: PS4, PC, 3DS. Got a Switch! Mainly to play Smash

No price cut and what's worst no price cut for the Vita which really needs one.
