Forums - General - Anyone here ever try to write a book?

The last time I tried to write a book I was kicked out of the library for vandalism.

Nintendo is selling their IPs to Microsoft and this is true because:

I tried to write a book at one point, but I stopped trying to complete the first sentence .

I'm in a similar position. I had a novel series where i started the first one when i was 13 (idea initially conceived at age 12), wrote parts of it on and off throughout high school, attempted to revisit it in college, but then i got snared in fan-fiction and haven't looked back. My parents are trying to convince me to "write something you can make money on," so i may get back to it, but in my case the world is developed far better than the characters, with maps, mythology, and an extensive political/military history. Characterization was never my strong suit before i started writing fanfiction, but in FF i've found that my strength has been characterization and my weakness has been action, so i could revive it with a rethink of my characters...

Well not every book needs action, you know.  I mean, plenty of books are without fight scenes or killing, so there's lots of plots, settings, and scenarios that you could explore that work to your strengths rather than trying to force yourself to do something you're not great with.

I would like to make money from my work, too, but I mostly do it for fun.  I write because I enjoy writing, not becuase I expect to make a career out of it.  the moment I HAVE to write, I don't want to anymore, and that's a shame.

My Console Library:

PS5, Switch, XSX

PS4, PS3, PS2, PS1, WiiU, Wii, GCN, N64 SNES, XBO, 360

3DS, DS, GBA, Vita, PSP, Android

Actually i was pretty good at writing action even back then. The choreography from the existing novel is more or less the only thing salvageable, as even my characters (at least the protagonists) need vastly redrawn. I just do poorly with action in fan-fiction because i have a harder time coordinating the more over-the-top fights certain anime are prone to (namely my work in One Piece) without it feeling very flat. My work in SWAT Kats also has some good action scenes, if i may say so, so perhaps its just something about me and One Piece.

My first action scenes were very anime-inspired as well, but I kinda grew out of it and evolved to more traditional action.  Swords and Sorcery style medievil stuff.

I honestly have some years ago. I do not want to divulge too much info but let's just say I am very meticulous at what I do or say and I had a deep fallout with a couple of good friends of mine and ommiting some information would be a lie to me. In this book, I was going to touch base on the different genres (I wanted to keep the reader guessing which ones I made up or is in fact the truth), as well as include some of the poems, and my drawings. Plus, another close of friend of mine pointed that I'd definitely touch a nerve, which of course I didn't mind but I'd end up moving out of state then. Of course, I still didn't mind, but this is where I met my gf :)

I have an idea for a novel that I've been turning over in my head for quite a number of years, I've wrote several chapters and short stories that relate to the overall plot and theme of the novel, but I've never been fully satisfied with my vision to fully attempt to write it all out.

I feel as though unless I feel it's perfect, I shouldn't bother writing it at all. I was told by a published author that my idea was utterly fascinating and has great promise, but it's not perfect to me. As a result on my perceived imperfections, the core idea for the novel has underwent complete revisions in my head, to the point that I have almost a dozen different scenarios for key moments in in the story and countless endings.

I think if I sit down and seriously just try to go with the flow and put in all on paper I'll produce something good. I really enjoy writing but I have a huge fear of failure.

i wrote one

“It appeared that there had even been demonstrations to thank Big Brother for raising the chocolate ration to twenty grams a week. And only yesterday, he reflected, it had been announced that the ration was to be reduced to twenty grams a week. Was it possible that they could swallow that, after only twenty-four hours? Yes, they swallowed it.”

- George Orwell, ‘1984’

Sure have. I started a book waaaaay back in HighSchool.

Whats done:
1) Have The World Map Drawn Out

2) All cities named, placed

3) Regions build (Mountains, Lakes Streams) all named

4) Backstory of all the leaders of each CIty/State/Region finished

5) Legends Created and Documented (I have a Glossary of Terms + a History of Houses, aka Song of Fire and Ice and Wheel of Time)

6) First 3 Chapters Finished (Introduces the Good/Bad/3rd Party perspectives, but only 3 characters introduced in 1 of the 3 chapters)

I have most of the main/important characters planned out, named and placed (when they will be introduced, what they do, etc).  I was inspired by Suikoden 3 actually, and redid my ideas going with a Trinity Sight System type story (Though this time it would really be from Good/Bad/3rd party) perspectives.

I have added a bit here and there since HS, but nothing of real consequence (adding locations to the map, names, backstory, history, etc)

I haven't started writing anything yet - but I've been working on it for the last... 15 years? Give or take a year or two. And I don't think I'll start any time soon cuz I want to be prepared when I do. I'm working on a fantasy world, trying to create it's histoty, mythology, peoples, the tectonic plate movements which will decide where the mountains are - you know, the usual stuff you need to have firmly in place before you even begin thinking about what name your character will have (and oh man, don't get me started about trying to find that perfect name either!).

It seems to me that ppl just rush into these kind of things with no plan whatsoever! There's a hell of alot of research you have to do before writing.

But I've told myself that I'll start writing it for real after my 29th birthday (which is this year)
