They get patents for the most basic/general ideas, a lot of the time without any proof that they are actually working with the tech (and even more times the patent ends in nothing produced), just so they can hinder rival companies products and collect undeserved royalties. This might be one of the only times I agree with you but if it got Microsoft to unleash it's legal might on causing a huge upheavel on the patent system then I agree some good may actually come of it. I don't know how they can get away with patenting some stuff such as the patent Microsoft lodged for customizable soundracks in games. It wasn't a patent but a theory on something that could be done with no proper clear definitions, it was deliberately vague to cause problems in my opinion and they often are.
