Earlier today as I was on my way home, a miracle happened; I managed to find a fairly empty bus! (This sentence implies that typically, there aren't many empty buses (which is true)). The seat was at the rear of the bus so I knew I would not have to deal with all the comotion that usually occurs at the front. I sat down and and relaxed my body from a long day of school & practice. All was fine until the bus filled up more & more until it became dangerously packed with riders. Eventually, an old lady boarded the bus & she had no seat. Me being towards the rear of the bus, I figured I wouldn't have to worry about giving my seat up to her; someone ahead of me would eventually offer their seat.
But I was wrong! She steadily made her way closer and closer to the rear with a determined look on her face. She somehow squeezed through the conjested mass of riders who were standing up & stopped right next to me. She was so fucking close! I considered offering her my seat but then I thought: If I give her my seat, I'll never find another place to sit with all these people. Then I checked the time and saw that I had another 40 minutes before I reached my destination. "Fuck that!" I though, I am too tired to be awkardly bunched up with all these people.
So I stayed planted in my seat. I didn't look at the lady, I tried ignoring her. Even though I never saw her look at me, I sure as hell could feel it. I felt her gaze upon my right cheek, piercing my soul with shame & dissapointment. I tried to look straight, but the riders in the front were looking at me with equal disappointment. I tried to look to the my left side but there was another old lady there with the same gaze as the old lady standing up on my right. So, I just looked at my shoes for the entire 40 minutes. To make matters worse, she had stumbled a bit during the ride and everyone in the front turned back to look at her with concern, then to me with shame. Again, I didn't actually see them look at me, but I felt it. And it was awkward...so awkward.
Twenty minutes passed and I considered giving my seat up, but I couldn't. I had already committed to keeping my seat through twenty minutes of stares and one stumble; I would look like a fool if I offered it now after all this time. And besides, I couldn't bear looking into her soul-piercing eyes to make the offer, so I stayed seated...still looking at my shoes.
Later when I got off the bus, I still felt the stares from the people and I felt so horrible. Why didn't I give her my seat? But I did find the seat first, so technically the seat was mine. But I'm a young and healthy guy, why couldn't I give my seat to someone who needed it? But on the other hand, why should I have to stand up because of an old person? And besides, I don't do this everyday...i was just really tired today. And the lady didn't get hurt or anything. She might have some sore feet later but life is sore, she'll have to deal with it. But then her feet would definitely be more sore than mine. Hmmm...Was I in the right or wrong?
That's what I'm asking you VGChartz. Am I wrong for this?
