I had the same problem, but the roles were reversed.

Yeah tell that to the person that one day ignores you while you need help with something. He/she will tell you they will loose energy if they let you sit on their seat.

You might be healthy and don’t need help but one day you will and you will ask yourself why did I not help that poor lady that needed help carrying the bags a couple of meters to get too her house.

I don't know how old you are, but you described yourself as a young/healthy male, so there's no reason you shouldn't have given up your seat to an old lady. Tired isn't an excuse, and neither is that you have a 40 minute ride...how do you think an old lady felt standing for 40 minutes?

Not sure why that would matter. If I'm down on my luck and no one offered me a seat, they can use the same reason I stated, and it wouldn't change anything. The consequence for helping the lady has the same level of risk as the consequence for not helping her. He doesn't need to help her because there is nothing to be gained and the reverse is also true. So, in a sense, there is no right or wrong answer for what he did. He just chose to do what felt was best, considering the circumstances. There is no right or wrong for what he did. Which is why I said it.
