I don't agree because you have take into account that there are hundreds of gaming websites out there so obviously the average won't be that high quality as the writing talent is spread out.

But pro sites like IGN and Gamespot, I think they have very professional writers.

I've read some IGN reviews on Nintendo games.  I am not impressed.  I am not expecting top scores or bowing down.  I am just expecting them not to complain about stupid shit.

Okay but what about the two most sophisticated sites, Edge and Eurosport?

I'll agree with that. There is a huge disparity among writers. There are good ones and bad ones, but the bad ones tend to stick out more.

Wow. I had no idea that Seanbaby was still out there somewhere. I assumed he died about 10 years ago, probably from choking to death while trying to simultaneously eat some sort of Hostess snack cake and tell a joke that included references to Mr. T, ALF, and Bible Adventures for the NES.

Anyway, pretty much all video game "journalists" suck a big fucking dick. It's a wonder that they don't just become real journalists. They certainly suck enough to make it to the big time.

Indeed they stick out. Like many others I imagine, I myself often browse N4G in my eternal hunt for interesting gaming news and nearly all articles they link to are garbage and I often scream to myself "amateur!".

But on the other hand if I read articles on Gamespot, IGN, Eurgamer and Edge I often think by myself surprised that the writing quality is on par with any well-known news paper.

I think there is just not much demand for them to be great writers. They can write terrible articles and get away with it, so editors or whoever is in charge let them keep doing it. If your readers are satisfied with poor articles, why change? I think that is the mentality.

Secondly, I think the talent pool might be a bit limited. Good writers probably focus on other venues, and I've also heard the pay isn't that well.

Yeah, very limited talent pool comparatively speaking. In other media such as news paper and culture pages, movies, art you have writers that studied journalism or languages on university level with full motivation to get a lifetime career of writing for people.

Also, there's only so many writers that can be fed and make a living out of gaming journalism. It's a niche market after all and despite some income from web-advertising browsing the internet is free so I imagine revenues aren't that high. Meanwhile the revenue from news papers all over the world must be hundreds of times bigger. Imagine, there's at least one big news paper in every town of 100K population in the world, sometimes even in smaller towns. That revenue allows probably tens of thousands of regular news journalists to make a living in America alone.

Have you guys read "real" journalism? It's worse than games journalism, if only because game journalists have to base their stories on stuff that actually happened in order to have any credibility.

Do you have the issue?  Sounds like an excellent article.

Its mostly because developers focus on gameplay and online aspects and graphics as well instead of storyline now a days.

I confused a few other people at first.  I said we could go both ways but that was more of a joke.  Perhaps I should just edit that out and stick to journalism.
