Forums - Gaming - Why does the video game industry have the worst writers?

Do you think most video game writers suck?

Yes 38 62.30%

No 23 37.70%

Total:61

I will make this op pretty short because it is a very basic yet intriguing question.  Why is the industry we love so much plagued with terrible writers who dwell on stupid topics, scenarios, etc..  It has gotten to the point where I almost don't even bother reading articles now.  I skim through it to see what they are talking about and that is about it.  Is it all the dumb ass doom articles?  How about all the stupid PR that gets reported?  Or the hardcore video game reviewer that grew up on Halo?  Or articles that you basically learn nothing or an announcement for an announcement...  Dare me to keep going?  How about another smartphone article?

Oops.... I was a little vague on if it was about writing for a video game or on video game journalism.  Sorry about that!  I was wanting to talk about video game journalism but we can go both ways

Shitty pay. Plus they have to write a story that leads to lots of action- because games are games first and foremost.

Even if it is just reporting news they seem to get it wrong.  I don't think they can actually write a decent story even if it is basically fed to them.

Before complaining about video game writers, you should make damned sure that your title is written properly.

Please change worse to worst.

I was thinking of using worst but didn't know if they were in fact the worst.  I was thinking along the lines of among the worse.  I guess I can change it to worst.

I'll point out the few people I respect for a little brighter side to the thread....

Seanbaby and Angry Video Game Nerd

That is about it for now...

I apparently did not read the OP very thouroughly. But yeah- game journos are pretty terrible.

They are kind of shitty to be honest.

The main reasons why are probably because with your typical Western shoot'em up or action game, neither the developers nor the gamers could really give a damn about the story, and with Japanese games, things can be lost in translation and there are certain things us Westerners don't understand.

EDIT:

Mis-read the OP too.

I have no idea why. Gaming journalism isn't taken very seriously and it isn't that popular, all of the best writers are probably doing something more worth while. I don't have a clue why terrible gaming journalists are picked for the job though, there are many people on VGC, hell, including me, who could do a better job than half the staff at IGN.

OT

I think some are pretty terrible, but I also really like the way that a lot of game journalists write. I don't care if it is unprofessional, I don't want my game reviews to look like a movie review.

You do not have to be able to write.
