They are kind of shitty to be honest.

The main reasons why are probably because with your typical Western shoot'em up or action game, neither the developers nor the gamers could really give a damn about the story, and with Japanese games, things can be lost in translation and there are certain things us Westerners don't understand.

I have no idea why. Gaming journalism isn't taken very seriously and it isn't that popular, all of the best writers are probably doing something more worth while. I don't have a clue why terrible gaming journalists are picked for the job though, there are many people on VGC, hell, including me, who could do a better job than half the staff at IGN.
