I think used game sales are fine, allowing friends to share games, and such. My issue is gamestop they are robbing the video game industry, as well as the consumers who sell games there.

Car manufacturers don't complain when people buy used cars, Samsung doesn't complain when you buy a used TV. Although having said that maybe a larger % of people buy used games in comparison to how many people buy new ones. In the end if developers are making more money it means bigger budgets for games and, supposedly, better games.

So you needed the Cerberus Network to play The Lair of the Shadow Broker, Arrivaland Project Overlord? Didn't realise that. Hardly mattered to me as I managed to pick the game up new for £15 (total bargain). Though I did dislike how if I didn't ahve my Xbox Live connection it stopped me from saving my game, that got really frustrating.
Well I am more of an average joe gamer compared to people here who are fanboys of companies.
Using such logic we should ban used car sales because companies are not getting enough money to create better cars.
Used video games expand the market dramatically. Meaning people who would not buy games buy games and like it and then are more willing to buy the next game new. How do you think many franchises explode in popularity from one game to the next?
Also the reason why Gamestop is able to act in such a manner, is the make it so easy. You can resell games for a higher price but it takes effort. Also people are willing to buy a used game copy if its only 5 dollars or 10 dollars cheaper as people have less disposable income then in the past.
Also I do not think paying 60 dollars for a game is ever worth it. Only game I bought full price is MW3.
If I could only buy games for 60 bucks, I would likley and most of my friends buy only COD or GTA.
I was able to play the Assassin creed games (1 AND 2 BROTHERHOOD) and I got them used for like 40 dollars combined.

People are less likely to buy a console when the only option is to buy 60 dollar games with no resale value, and not even have the option to borrow games from friends. Instead of using a punishment system with project 10 dollar, why not introduce a loyalty system. When you buy a new game of the same publisher and still have your registered original game disc, they could imburse you money for digital purchases, or give you upcoming dlc for free. Steam already does it for digital purchases. They would need to add a unique id to each game disc if that's possible. The way it is now first time purchases are regarded as beta testers, and 2nd hand purchases are regarded as scum by the industry. Maybe they want us all to wait for the fixed up discounted goty edition? |
Seem does extremely well for one and that is without used sales, number two not all games are 60 as prices drop. Not all games should be 60 dollars either and that probably will change eventually too
I'm going to go ahead and add something. People are comparing the video game company to other industries? How many game companies have you all seen go out of business in the last few years? A lot right? One reason would be because the used market. Also stop saying stuff about used CD's because honestly most people don't buy CD's at all. Movies make majority of their money at theatre's and books are not sold side by side used. Very few people by used clothes because of physical wear. It's like most of you all aren't even thinking at all
true but all new games are 60 dollars.
Meaning either prices will come down to around 40-50 when Used games are gone or people will not even consider buying non franchise games.
Also games are unlike other items were easy to resale like cars.
Also, if they do this sales will crash. Remember if your posting on this board your not an average gaming person.
I stronly strongly! dislike the idea of erradicating the used game market for 2 reasons.
1. When it comes to used games, how will this affect games that have long been out of print? Say like someone wanted to buy the First God of War used, does that person have to pay extra just because he bought it used? He would have a much harder time looking for the game factory sealed than used if the 2nd hand market was gone. What if 5-15 years from now somebody bought a used game that had the online activation feature just to play it? chances are that, the game is uselsee cause the companie either stopped supporting it, or went belly up.
2. If the used market had ceased, the result would've been a pseudo-prohibition like situation. Where would the consumers go for their "fix" if buying it used was gone? They would have to resort to the black market which would increase piracy substantialy. Videogame companies would loose even more money than they already are from new used games.

Also they will be forced to reduce prices.
Also if they shift towards fully digital I doubt sales will stay the same level.
For example, Music is all digital however the amount of people buying music properly is wayyyy down from the past.
I think if they do it sales will crash, I would not even think about buying games like Uncharted for 60 bucks.

If you would have read ANY of the economic reasoning in this thread, you would have realized by now, that having a used market actually inflates the size of the new market for video games. Get rid of the used market, and the whole market will shrink.
Given that it doesn't actually increase sales, you still cannot blame the company going out of business on the used game market. The used game market has always been there. That being the case, if it actually decreases sales, it was the companies responsibility to make a financial plan that can survive with the given competition in the market.
My guess is with the video game companies going out of business, it has a lot more to do with mismanagement than anything else.
Money can't buy happiness. Just video games, which make me happy.
