It's not the donation that people dislike, it is the fact that his donation is not much of a sacrifice (and probably not any) at all due to the tax rebate; and he is also using it purely as a vanity opportunity.


How can you possibly say it's just a vanity opportunity? Not everyone has an alterior motive for donating. Would you rather he just keep all his money which he could quite easily do?

That is how many large charity funds or large endowment funds are funded.

There is a lot of money kept and is invested in a conservative fashion and the interest generated can be very large if the fund is very large.

Not going to go into whether he is doing  it for taxes or not, because others already commented on it. But going to ask you one question

 

Does it matter?  Is it so bad if Bill Gates did donate $750 million to charity only to reduce his taxes?  Would you rather he donate nothing to charity and pay full taxes?

Rich peopel can't do anything without people thinking their is an ulterior motive.  It's sickening.

Quite simple, he held a press conference to announce the donation as shown in the original post. And no he couldn't quite easily keep all of his money, if he didn't donate to charities then he would pay it in taxes.

Essentially, he donates in place of taxes, and holds press conferences so people like you will praise him. If he would donate anonymously, it would be a completely different story.
