There is nothing wrong in what he is doing and I respect him for it.

I would have respected him more if all this was done without so much media hype... yes, it is possible to give away without the world knowing and it being front page news. Other companies and people give money away and nothing or little is heard about it.

The words of a great teacher that lived a couple thousand years ago begs the question:

Does he do it for the praise of men (like so many here thinking what a great man he is for giving money away) or does he really have a big heart?

I think it is a bit of both but THE IMPORTANT THING IS as long as people benefit from the money who really cares.

I get that too... but seeing as his foundation fund is extremely high profile already and has to publish charity accounts then its a bit moot.  I also think that over the last year or so Bill's tactic has been lead by example or to shame others into donating too.   These kind of high profile events are a way he has achieved that, with some success.

Yeah, kowen beat me to it.  Bill and others like him (Warren Buffet, for one) is about setting an example for the 1%.  They've come to have a much more enlightened view of material riches.  Good for them.

Despicable man. He's making me look bad for not having monies to donate.

LOL!  Best comment here.  You just satirically encapsulated all of the negative comments here in an ironically honest way.  Love it.

this is typical way how rich people laundry their money not to pay tax. the foundation is run by Gates himself and they control everything. it is just simply put, I DO NOT WANT TO PAY TAX".

Wow dude...what an ignorant thing to say.

Yeah because every rich person who donates money does it to avoid taxes.

The Gates foundation makes $750 million a year in interest alone from its $37 billion endowment, so this isnt really that big a deal.

Motherfu- !

How much do you donate to charities?!

This.

I seriously hate people who say the rich only donate to avoid taxes and bullshit like that.

So basically instead of people being glad he's giving $750 million to poor/diseased people that he could have bought a private island with, this is the sort of shit I'm reading:

- this is typical way how rich people laundry their money not to pay tax. the foundation is run by Gates himself and they control everything. it is just simply put, I DO NOT WANT TO PAY TAX".

- The Gates foundation makes $750 million a year in interest alone from its $37 billion endowment, so this isnt really that big a deal.

- If I had his money, I would have donated 20 times as much at the least.

- He's a joke, he just gives investisment's revenues, not at all is money, he never spent a penny in humanitarian things, that's just badly earn interests money. Bill doesn't deserve media attention, he's a bad guy.

So the question is simple to the people left of Stalin..

Would you rather have Bill Gates buy a private island or give 750 million dollars of money that may be simply interest income to charity.

Also the reason why charity is given preferential tax treatment is to encourage everyone as a whole to donate.

For example I do not have much disposable income but many of the adults in my family donate put always make sure they get slips.

For god sake... the lack of understanding of a simple concept is staggering.

He HAS donated hundreds of times that, let alone 20 times... lol.  This is a donation from his charitable fund which has billions in it, those billions are derived from money HE has donated over his lifetime and will be used for good long after he is dead.

I also make regular donations to charity from my income... I hope you do.

hundreds of times 750 million, so he's donated hundreds of billions of dollars? Any links? Because I think you are full of a hundred billion tons of bullshit.

I describe myself as a little dose of toxic masculinity.

It's not the donation that people dislike, it is the fact that his donation is not much of a sacrifice (and probably not any) at all due to the tax rebate; and he is also using it purely as a vanity opportunity.

You know anyone who donates can get a tax credit and also its a tax minimization strategy actually.

For a person with wealth it allows you to give back to the community and lower your overall taxes owed for other things.

So literally, what your point?

Stop pretending to be all high and mighty.
