I would have respected him more if all this was done without so much media hype... yes, it is possible to give away without the world knowing and it being front page news. Other companies and people give money away and nothing or little is heard about it. The words of a great teacher that lived a couple thousand years ago begs the question: Does he do it for the praise of men (like so many here thinking what a great man he is for giving money away) or does he really have a big heart? I think it is a bit of both but THE IMPORTANT THING IS as long as people benefit from the money who really cares.

I get that too... but seeing as his foundation fund is extremely high profile already and has to publish charity accounts then its a bit moot. I also think that over the last year or so Bill's tactic has been lead by example or to shame others into donating too. These kind of high profile events are a way he has achieved that, with some success.

Yeah, kowen beat me to it. Bill and others like him (Warren Buffet, for one) is about setting an example for the 1%. They've come to have a much more enlightened view of material riches. Good for them.
