and Warren Buffet is one of the trustees also matching their contributions. Kind of flies in the face of those who say Gates is evil and greedy.

The Gates foundation makes $750 million a year in interest alone from its $37 billion endowment, so this isnt really that big a deal.

I was reading an article today (can't remember where) where old Mr Gates was quoted as saying he "doesn't pay enough tax" which is why he donates a lot to charity.

In case you didn't read the Wiki article - To maintain its status as a charitable foundation, it must donate at least 5% of its assets each year. Thus the donations from the foundation each year would amount to over US$1.5 billion at a minimum.
