Forums - Gaming - Ninja Theory on DMC reboot: "we're not pretending we're Japanese, or apologising for it"

those statements are way way too generalized about both west and the east

I imagine if they did God of War

"We in the West tend to be more functional adding things that have meaning and being able to explain that meaning. Why does Kratos have no hair? I want to make a little story around that and explain it. And so on for the rest of his design choices."

You singled handedly made his even more stupid lol

I'm guessing they would only tell a story if there is an interesting story to tell. Going with God of War again, the entire basis of the series can be found by asking: "Why is Kratos so pale?".

eh? no you can't :S and the color was explained as well so I don't think that's a good example

I know there are other things that go into it as well, but the whole vengeance thing was pretty much established with that.

And it's been explained because there was a good game to be had from explaining it. Why couldn't the same be true for dmc? There could be a really cool adventure in the story of how Dante's hair got white.

Ninja Theory doesn't get Devil May Cry at all. It's supposed to be over the top, filled crazy totally unrealistic fight scenes and Dante is supposed to be an overconfident, irreverent wise-ass.

The way I see it. Dante's hair didn't get white, it was always white.

I haven't played any DMC games outside of DMC4, but I'm guessing that that's an assumption rather than a fact? Do correct me if I'm wrong.

Yes it's an assumption but he's the son of a demon and a human. That's more than enough for me to explain him having white hair (and the fact that he can have a blade go through him and still be able to fight).

My take on this reboot is that it's not at all related to DMC 1-4, it is not an origin story, their Dante and the one of the other games is not the same character. So even if they screw it all up, it won't affect Dante's characterization in the original games.

It was always white , even his brother had white hair.

I think their father had white hair too, cant remember a source for it though, something about that hidden costume for Dante in DMC3/Special Edition.

Anyways, this DMC is a reboot, so their re-telling the storyline (which can go bad in so many ways).

Just all the more reason to leave any assumptions behind.

I'm still slightly confused as to why they are making a DmC game at all. They clearly don't like the original games. The characters are all entirely different, the setting is different, it seems like the gameplay is as similar to DmC as GoW etc.

There was really nothing to prevent them from having it be an entirely different IP. I mean when this new DMC comes out well... even if it's a good game why is it a DMC game? The games have always been about over the top characters and action, stylized visuals, fast and responsive gameplay and huge depth to the combat. NT seem to actively despise the first two of those things and have never made a game with either of the latter two. They also seem completely uninterested in having either of the latter as it appears they didn't even consider 60fps and have removed many gameplay features.

It wouldn't even be as bad if it was a side game but we are getting it instead of a proper entry. No matter the outcome the original franchise gets hurt as well. The 3 possibilities are - DmC fails badly, it has damaged the DMC name and Capcom want to shelve the series for a while.
DmC does okay but not great. The original fans aren't happy, there aren't really enough to new fans to continue the series and Capcom stalls on it for a while to decide what to do.
DmC does amazing and gets great sales. The original series is now viewed as un-needed, the style of the original games is completely lost and we end up with totally different characters, story and gameplay.

Turkish says and I'm allowed to quote that: Uncharted 3 and God Of War 3 look better than Unreal Engine 4 games will or the tech demo does. Also the Naughty Dog PS3 ENGINE PLAYS better than the UE4 ENGINE.

I don't think the reason behind why he is grey explained the vengeance plot :S wait can you remember why he is grey?

and I'm not disagreeing..small details are important to story telling and I'm on the boat that good solid interesting story PLUS gameplay > mindless story and gameplay
