Forums - Gaming - Ninja Theory on DMC reboot: "we're not pretending we're Japanese, or apologising for it"

i look at DMC4 Dante and i cringe at what Capcom did with him. they westernised his design, the red cowboy boots look ridiculous. and its not cool at all. i was extremely unhappy with the westernised design from DMC4. i'm happy they've given NT a chance to do something more interesting, because the dialogue and the story in that game were borderline nauseating.

the Bayonetta comment... this is actully true, Bayonetta is Japanese. her clothes come off all the time in the game. this female objectification is something you tend to find in a Japanese game. it is ridiculous.

its depressing that developers cant make reasonable comments about things. Tameen hasnt grossly offended those games or fans, he actully said why he dosent like it. and if you look at what he said its not without truth. fans are simply looking for new ways to discredit a developer who actully havent done anything wrong.

and we dont know if Hideki Itsuno or the team at Capcom want to make these games anymore. they made 3 DMC games, they might not want to do it anymore. which is why Itsuno is also directing Dragon's Dogma. it might be because he wants to do something different with his career.

besides i look at every game Capcom have made this console generation, and i dont see DMC5 being anything special after their performance this generation.

My point wasn't that Bayonetta isn't Japanese in style. I was taking issue with using the word 'Japanesey' and his view that Japanese style isn't cool.

Dante doesn't wear cowboy boots in DMC4 so I'm not sure what game you played. He wears combat styled boots with leather chaps over the top. However even if he did, cowboy style boots were and still are pretty popular in Tokyo/Osaka etc. It's started moving back towards a rounded toe boot for men much like the ones Dante wears in DMC4. I also know quite a few Japanese brands where you could find clothes similar to his style. It really wasn't very Westernised at all. Well unless we want to take a very classical view that wearing jeans etc instead of Yukata is Western, however if that is the case then Dante was never Japanese in style.

I still think Devil May Cry's style is cool. Give me over stylized compared to drab and boring any day. I'm not sure who at Ninja Theory thought wearing a wife beater was cool, perhaps someone who watches Jersey Shore?

Also the main games capcom made this generation and their scores on gamerankings? Dead Rising (85%), Lost Planet (79%), DMC4 (84%), Street Fighter 4 (93%), Marvel Vs Capcom 3 (86%), RE5 (87%).

Games capcom put in the hands of western developers? Bionic Commando (73%) and Dark Void (62%).

Then Dead rising 2 which was given to a Western developer but kept almost everything identical to the Japanese game got 80%. Lost Planet 2 was Capcom saying they were attempting to Westernise their own game, which didn't go so well (70%)!

So basically every single game they gave to a western developer or tried to westernise turned out very badly. Every game they kept Japanese did well. So you think giving DMC to a western developer to westernise is a good idea? Capcom have been giving games to Western developers or trying to Westernise their games for years now. It always ends badly. This year we will also get to see how RE: Operation Racoon City (Western) does compared to RE6 (Japanese)

Turkish says and I'm allowed to quote that: Uncharted 3 and God Of War 3 look better than Unreal Engine 4 games will or the tech demo does. Also the Naughty Dog PS3 ENGINE PLAYS better than the UE4 ENGINE.

From what I understand, RE: ORC has been getting mediocre reception at demo events. Slant Six's last game was a TERRIBLE entry in the SOCOM series (which has been stumbling badly for a few years now) so they might have made another mediocre title. On the other hand RE6's reveal had a positive reception and people are EAGERLY anticipating any more news regarding it. Also, other titles by CAPCOM that have been well-received have been the VERY Japanese Okamiden, Ghost Trick, Tatsunoko vs CAPCOM, and Zack and Wiki. Resident Evil: Revelations has also been getting positive reception overall. It just baffles me as to why CAPCOM gave this series to a studio that obviously has NOTHING but contempt for Dante and all his fans. NT, as a whole, is just pathetic

Plah. Its same as saying Square enix is making next COD.You know it just doesn't work.

Square Enix knows western games are where its at, thats why they've been publishing them. Outside of Final Fantasy western games have and will continue to carry their collective ass.

I'm not the only one who thinks their cowboy boots. dosent really matter. the point is i dont play games for Dante's footware. thats the point. this game isnt about style so much as its about substance.

actully if you look at Dante's facial and body design their is a distict change from the anime based design of DMC3/2/1 to the westernised design of DMC4. i could show comparasion shots if you like. besides theres even better proof than that...

i dont know how to say this but Resident Evil 5 was a POS. it was a Japanese developer trying to force a western style onto a Japanese game. the departure of Shinji Mikami didnt help. and Ninja Theory arnt a typical western developer, their two previous games contained eastern design influences.

a woman's clothese coming off every time in a game isnt cool. it is objectification on a ridiculous level. and that really not what i look for in games. the DMCs games were decent on a gameplay level. but the point of this game is too enhance some of those elements, while creating a believeable story with a more serious tone. from what i've seen from Ninja Theory i am happy Capcom chose them to improve the level of storytelling in the series.

i dont know what a wife beater is and i dont watch Jersery Shore. so...

Perhaps you should provide examples of how Dante was Westernised since I disproved your last point, and you suddenly decided it didn't matter.

Because looking at the characters I don't see a huge amount of change. DMC4 Dante looks perhaps a tiny slither more slender than DMC1 dante.

Your personal opinion that RE5 was a 'pos' doesn't mean much. It was critically very well received and sold very well. I see you have ignored my point that all Capcom developed Japanese games were good while the Western developer ones that tried to be Western were bad. RE5 was still very clearly a Japanese game and was clearly derived from RE4 (another japanese game). DmC is the new Bionic Commando, Dark void and perhaps RE:ORC

Dante has been objectified in games as well. It goes with the territory of over stylized. You also seem to be taking the attitude that the only style present in Bayonetta is nudity. Perhaps you should play the game? It oozes fantastic design work.

It seems don't actually care about design, style or fashion at all so unsure why you have decided to bring it up. The fact you think DMC should have a believable story and a serious tone seems to tell me that you actually aren't a fan of the original games since they are the opposite. A serious tone, believable story and unstylized angsty Dante makes it a completely different series. No point in it being a DMC game.

the link underneath the picture links to the orignal DMC4 trailer with a different Dante.

the only thing in common is the red coat and the white hair. if you look at the pictures you yourself showed. these are also different Dantes. if you look a the orignal Kamiya design you can see he is more slender. same as with the DMC2 design and 3. and their faces are different. the DMC4 design features a broader frame, exposure of the larger forearms. the well defined jawline, the smaller eyes (like many a western charater). and the awful camp dialogue that was a key feature of DMC4s writing.

besides Dante's personality and apperance have changed inconsistantly with each DMC game. there is a very good reason for that i will come to in a min. i dont have time to do any research on the games Capcom have released this gen. by any true fan of survival horror or Resident Evil, knows that just because its made by Capcom Japan, its not the follow up to the masterpiece Shinji Mikami acheived with RE4. RE5 took everything acheived by RE4 and threw it in the trash for Gears of War co-op. like you said it worked, best selling ever RE. but its still a POS made by Japanese developers attempting to mimic a development style they didnt understand. in effect ruining everything RE4 achieved.

by the way Bayonetta featured the best combat system in any action game ever, period. i've platinumed the game, you can check if you dont believe me. i also S ranked every mission in DMC1. and that game was my personal faviourite of the series. but on you point of Bayonetta. i havent commented on its style, so i'm not sure what your trying to push here. the point Tameen of NInja Theory was making is that he dosent think that type of Japanese style is cool. personally i agree with his point on it being ridulous. Tameen dosent actully insult the fans, he states his opinion, this isnt offensive.

this is confusing to me, you've said DMC is your faviourite series, yet for some reason your telling me an a believable story isnt important.

DMC1 was originally created by Hideki Kamiya of Capcom's Production Divison 4. Dante in this game is great, hes cool and relatable on some levels. from when he mentions his mother to Trish, and the end of the game when he attempts to save her. so we see a good story, and we see some cool stuff in here. that isnt too over the top.

for whatever reason Capcom didnt bring back Kamiya for DMC2, its was not that good. i didnt think it was that bad. it just wasnt that good from a gameplay standpoint. anyway for DMC3 Capcom once again turned to Hideki Itusno and the same team which made DMC2. they learned from their mistakes and did what is considered a great job for DMC3. i thought the game was good, but not as good as DMC1. anyway this game features a different Dante, he looks a bit different (maybe younger) his personality is actully different from the previous 2 Dantes. in DMC4 we see a new Dante again. his personality is an extreme version of the DMC3 version and his appearance is westernised from the original DMC4 teaser trailer as we saw. even Hideki Kamiya has said that Dante has changed over time, his Dante wouldve been very, very different from DMC4's Dante. his Dante wouldve become more like Sparda eventually.

my point is that Dante has changed in every game. hes not a consistant character because the original creator never continued with the sequels. the storyline is inconsistant, with DMC2 now not even considered cannon anymore (i believe). your telling me i cant be a fan of the DMC series because the original had a semi-serious tone and a good story with a relatable character? DMC2, 3 and 4 changed all that by changing the character and creating major inconsistancies with the cannon.

the point is, i lost interest with DMC after DMC4. the story was not enjoyable, the camp cutscenes were not enjoyable. at that point even the combat wasnt enjoyable. there is a reason why Bayonetta trumps DMC4 on every level and thats because the devloper of the orignal DMC game made it. however at the same time, the game isnt something played for its story or characters. and based on what i've seen from DmC, i'm very impressed with the level design and the gameplay so far.

besides most importantly its not just me who thinks DmC should have a more beliavable story with releasitic characters, Capcom do to. so maybe you should take it up with them if you have a problem. because they own the DMC property. thats why Kamiya has no control over the franchise he created. thats also why Ninja Theory are not to blame for any changes you dont like. its the same Capcom who released rubbish like DMC4 and RE5. that should say more than i need to. thats why DmC has a chance, because its being made by Ninja Theory and overseen by Capcom.

The pictures I posted show DMC4 Dante with a more slender frame actually. You know actual pictures from the games as opposed to a non-existent version of the character?
http://www.creativeuncut.com/gallery-08/art/dmc-dante7.jpg
His jaw, eyes, forearms are all the same. If you are going to make up imaginary things then there is really no point discussing it. None of them change at all beyond what you would expect of a game getting improved graphics. Not even considering that in DMC4 Dante is older than in 1 and as such should be a bit bulkier. Seriously your whole argument is based on a teaser trailer that was made as a conceptual thing. Instead of comparing it to the other actual games. It's a joke.

DMC2 isn't counted as it wasn't even by the same team. It was a random rushed game.

Yes there is a good reason for Dante's appearance changing. In 3 he is much younger so less developed, then in 1 is older and then in 4 older still. His changes are completely consistent with growing older both physically and mentally.

The original DMC most definitely doesn't have a believable story. It is over the top.

You platinumed Bayonetta? Big whoop. I 1000/1000 it. Not a very difficult task at all. Compared to other hack and slashes it is pretty easy to complete. NT said that Bayonetta wasn't cool because it was too 'Japanesey' I disagreed. Then you agreed with them, so yes you did say the game is uncool and not stylish.

Oh and again the RE5 stuff is your opinion. It is far far far more like RE4 than GoW. It is basically RE4 gameplay with co-op added. Oh but look you decided to change the topic to how it isn't survival horror. What a surprise changing the argument again! Hey if you want to get all 'True fan of survival horror' Then neither is RE4 and RE purists will tell you how it ruined the series.

So far your only argument depends on the fact you think RE5 and DMC4 are bad. Despite both getting great reviews and great sales.... so yea you don't really have a leg to stand on.

And you still haven't addressed how all of Capcom's western games have been worse.

Oh also slightly embarrassing for you despite RE5 being a 'pos' you decided to platinum it.... yea. So this terrible game was so bad you played it all the way through at least 3 times and did literally everything in the game? I wonder if you are in fact simply trolling? Seems very likely.

So end of discussion. I refuse to debate with someone who ignores points, rather than making valid comparisons points to a non-existent version of a character and decides to troll about a game he clearly enjoyed and played to death.

No my whole argument is based on visble changes in his physical design facially and anthropometrically that are evident when you look at comparasion shots of the character. your telling me you think DMC4 Dante is the same as DMC1 Dante fine. thats not my problem. i can see the visible changes and the changes in personality from DMC1 to DMC4. the character is inconsistant. which is based on the change in developers which i've already explained. besides its irrelevant. Hideki Kamiya the creator of the DMC series acknowledges that Dante has changed in each installment.

DMC2 was made by the same team who made DMC3 and 4. directed by Hideki Itsuno, director DMC2, 3 and 4. they learned from their mistakes in DMC3. surely if this is your faviourite series you should know all this anyway...

Tameen not Ninja Theory, said that he enjoyed Bayonetta, yet the Japanesy style of the game was ridiculous. i said i thought it was the best action game ever made, which is why i platinumed it, but i agree with him, it is ridculous. firstly dont tell me how to think. i will say what it is i like or dont like not you. like i said the clothes, the sexual inundeo dialogue and the semi-poor story were all part of that style. it wasnt bad, but it wasnt good either. some things were great like level design and music. but its still an over the top Japanese based product, that typically flows from that Japanese style. how many times must that be explained? are you saying that Bayonetta is not Japanese?

DMC1's story isnt over the top. Trish hires out Dante to a mysterious castle, where Dante confronts the hordes of Mundus. its not that ridculous. the orignal never was. the dialogue and the cutscenes arnt over the top either. in fact Dante is pretty cool in the original. you can embed every cutscene from youtube if you must. but the proof is in the pudding. theres nothing that over the top in it at all. DMC1 and to an extent 2 were not over the top. in fact DMC2 was criticised for being too serious in tone. and the story in DMC2 was actully not bad, it was good, it was the gameplay that let it down.

DMC3 the style changed to become more over the top. it was okay. but it was the gameplay that really made the game. DMC4 was an extreme version of DMC4, where Dante is camp. again you can embed the 2 hours of non-sensical cutscenes from youtube if you need further proof. Dante isnt even the main character. DMC4 was designed so Nero would become the main character in the next installements. and your telling me that mentally their is a consistant change in Dante's personallity. are you telling me as he gets older, its realistic for him to become extremely camp. again embed cutscenes for proof.

i told you i dont have time to go through Capcom's library of games to esablish why nearly everything they've done this generation is not that good. this isnt about that anyway. and i platinumed RE5 because of how amazing RE4 was. not that thats relevant anyway.

it all comes down to this anyway. you dont like the game you dont have to harass those of us who like the game, you dont have to insult NInja Theory. as we know its Capcom who instigated this reboot not Ninja Theory. Capcom came to NT because THEY themselves were unsatisfied with DMC. Hideki Itunso is also directing Dragons Dogma, he might have had enough of the series and maybe wants to do something different. its irrelevant, you dont like the game dont buy it, its as simple as that.

and you quoting sales numbers to me. okay fine. God of War 3 sold more copies than DMC4. and a higher metacritic, are you saying that immediately makes it better than DMC3 and 4. based on that alone?? same goes for RE5. load of shooters have higher scores and metacritics, does that mean your saying all those western games are better?? and like i said, why dont you go to Capcom with this. surely if you have a point they will take you seriously...

besides Capcom have said their targetting COD players with more action elements and more co-op for RE6. surely that tells you that their moving away from survival horror, like they did with RE5. your not just arguing with me here. these are things Capcom themselves are saying to fans.

IMO I prefer the Japanese style over a western style game. A game only needs to be believable within the universe of that said game being believable does not have to mean realistic as in our real life. And Re4 is closest to Re5 in gameplay as both are action oriented and less survival horror

Nothing over the top or ridiculous at all. Allow me to sum up the first cutscene for people:
Dante is relaxing in his office. A woman wearing sunglasses at night, skintight pants and a corset crashes through the doors of his building. Dante responds ''Woaaahh slow down babe'', he isn't surprised even slightly. He tells her that the toilet is in the back. He then walks up to her with a sword, she grabs it, kicks him across the room and throws the sword into him spearing him to a wall. She uses lightning from her hands on him then she then PICKS UP the motorbike, lifts it over her head and throws it across the room. Dante, who is speared through the chest, whips out dual pistols and manages to keep the bike floating in the air with the bullets. The bike then BURSTS into flames and flies back at the woman. She dodges this and Dante cooly stands up, walks over to her then pulls the sword out of his chest. They then have a discussion in the now burning building. It seems Dante despite clearly having spent a lot of time living in and decorating the place doesn't mind that it is burning though.

None of this is ridiculous or over the top. It is in fact all very serious!..... seriously A203D at what point did you decide to simply lie?

All my points still stand uncontested. Like I said end of discussion ;)
