Forums - Sony - PS4 early specs 'more powerful' than Xbox 720, claims source

Well, from the fact that it is still so hard to have a clear answer on what the WiiU specs rly are more than 6months after its announcement, I would rly be surprised if some magasines got theyr hands on BOTH consoles specs 5months before theyr announcement (and that is IF they are both announced at E3)

Me personnaly, I never cared about horsepower. I know i will buy the WiiU for sure. Its a no-brainer cause I rly want to play mario, zelda, metroid, pikmin3, mario kart and smash. I will be thinking of buying a other next-gen console later, depending on their price and depending on WiiU's third party support but I wont necessary chose my 2nd console by looking on theyr horsepower, I will be looking at other factors like utility and first-party games.

I doubt theyr will be a difference big enough for me to care. Ps3 is more powerfull than xbox360, and arguably the best graphics ive ever seen were Uncharted3, but to be honest theyrs not a huge difference between UC3 and gears of wars 3, they both look amazing, and if UC3 had Gears 3 graphics and Gears ran with UC3's graphics I wouldnt care and my opinion on both games wouldnt change. Now take those kind of graphics and imagine how games would look like on WiiU who is 2to3 times more powerfull, i cant even imagine how AMAZING games will look like, so if Ps4/x720 are 5-6times more powerfull than current-gen I dont think I will care, graphics will be amazing on all 3 consoles, they will be extremely realistics and I doubt that the differences will be dealbreaker, hell I thought super mario galaxy was a beautifull game. I rly think content, interface, applications and gimmicks will be what will win next gen's wars, not power and graphic, all games will look extremely good and realistics and comparing the 3consoles would be comparing an amazingly good looking game like gears of wars 3 to a other amazingly good looking game like uncharted 3, Or comparing the graphics of Forza4 to gran turismo5.

I hope Sony don't make the same mistakes this time around, having the best graphics is cool and all, but that's not what will bring success.

I wouldn't worry about that.  Sony can have the best graphics, while also having a ver competitive price.  They are sticking with Blu-ray (I imagine we'll see a 8x or 12x drive this time around) and probably won't be developing a brand new CPU tech (probably will stick to something similar to the Cell).  So we're going to be getting much more RAM and a much better GPU.  My guess is we're going to be getting better graphics than even those mock-up trailers Sony did for the PS3.

Killzone 2 looks significantly better than that trailer, and Killzone 3 takes a shit all over it.

ps3 produces way better graphics than that

You have got to be joking.  I'm a big Sony/PS3 supporter and own both Killzone 2 and 3, both of which I feel are the two best looking FPSs on console.  While GG tried their best to get close to those trailers, they are definitely nowhere near being better than that trailer.  Facial animation, the scale of the city and battle, poly count and texture detail are all better in that trailer than in the real game.  There is a reason why there was controversy when both Motorstorm and Killzone 2 were actually released, but it had nothing to do with the graphics being better than what was shown at E3 '05.

are you watching the same video i am?

that if that game were to release today, it would be average at best graphically. Many many games have passed that up. the faces look way more cartoon-y, the explosions look fake, the gun models are crap-ola, the environmental detail is... lacking. every thing just looks not very good. its not impresive by todays standards.

motorstorm on the other hand...

Please sony. Dont be trying to be the big shots next gen by making a very poweful and very expensive system.. hopefully they learn there lesson from the ps3.

I'm sure both will do the job.... it's not the size that counts, it's the thrusting and creativity after all..

We must not be watching the same one, cause the video looks better than the actual game.  There's only a couple of things the game got better, which are the character's looks (not talking poly count) and the colors (everything in the trailer looks a little too bright).  But other than that, the trailer outdoes the game on every level.  The environments look bigger and more detailed, and animations are better.  I don't really want to go offtopic anymore, so I'll just leave one more vid as my final argument.

I agree with Xarx, the important thing is we get a true generational leap in processing power on at least two consoles in next gen so that multiplatforms can achieve a full generational leap in graphics.

I would be disappointed if Xbox 720 and PS4 were less than 10 times more powerful than a X360. I want them both to be 16 times as powerful than a X360. If that comes true then it's not a big deal for me if either of them is 20-30% powerful as the other.

And yes, it's extremely important we get the X720 and PS4 to be 10-16 times more powerful than a X360 or else the Wii U will be the lowest common denominator for all nexgen multiplatforms. From what we know the Wii U is at best 3 times faster than a X360, and if multiplatform games from 2014 and beyond were designed with those specs in mind it would feel like we were stuck in current gen (analugous to how a powerful gaming PC with two Nvidia 580 GPUs runs BF3 in 2560x1600 res and 8 AA in +60 fps but it still looks like a current gen game because the basic structure of BF3 is designed around the X360).

If this does not become the case, then at least there are first party offerings. In some ways I would like it if one of the two companies made a much more powerful system while the other tried a more casual offering. Maybe if we have either a Gears 4, or Uncharted 4 that blows away 3rd party offerings people will start to ask why. If Sony or Microsoft are willing to step it up, it could be very good for them, and PC gamers for the next 6 - 8 years.

My fanboy side says that Sony has built up a massive first party development studio just to make this a reality. They can sell a $500 PS4 that blows the competition away, and they can max out the graphics, while 3rd parties try to make the same game across all three platforms. In my fanboy world;

WiiU - $299 launch 2GB RAM/No HDD/IBM Power 7 4 core/AMD midrange
XB3  - $399 launch 4GB RAM/HDD/IBM Power 7  8core/AMD top end
PS4  - $499 launch 8GB RAM/SSD/IBM Power 8 24 Core/Nvidia top end 1 series newer than xb3

No matter what I will have all three regardless though.

So they know the final clock speed and enough specifications 18 months out to make a judgement like that?

Why would they need to know that to know "PlayStation 4's early technical specifications are looking "more powerful" than those of Microsoft's next-generation Xbox targets"? Nowhere is it claimed anything about final specs, thos final specs are unlikely to diverge to far from the early specs so if one is targetting higher end hardware now final specs will likely reflect that.

The architecture may not change but the specifications might. Adding more cores is easy on modern graphics hardware as it scales nicely and Microsoft was trying to decide whether or not to launch a loss leading console.

You'd be surprised Squilliam.  Like, I remember a good year before the 360 released I used leaked 360 spec sheet as a basis for a presentation (We had to take an English writing class in our program and a presentation was an assignment).  The specs that were in those sheets were spot on to release; right down to the registers.  If Microsoft plans to launch in 2013; the hardware is already finalized (Same with Sony).

It isn't final until they tape out their final chip designs. Whilst the architecture may not change at this point they can still change the number of cores, RAM etc. Just because they didn't change it within a year of the leaked specifications doesn't mean that they won't. I believe that the PS3's RSX was a fairly last minute addition if I recall relatively to when it was supposed to release, I think within 18 months of early 2006.
