If this does not become the case, then at least there are first party offerings. In some ways I would like it if one of the two companies made a much more powerful system while the other tried a more casual offering. Maybe if we have either a Gears 4, or Uncharted 4 that blows away 3rd party offerings people will start to ask why. If Sony or Microsoft are willing to step it up, it could be very good for them, and PC gamers for the next 6 - 8 years.
My fanboy side says that Sony has built up a massive first party development studio just to make this a reality. They can sell a $500 PS4 that blows the competition away, and they can max out the graphics, while 3rd parties try to make the same game across all three platforms. In my fanboy world;
WiiU - $299 launch 2GB RAM/No HDD/IBM Power 7 4 core/AMD midrange
XB3 - $399 launch 4GB RAM/HDD/IBM Power 7 8core/AMD top end
PS4 - $499 launch 8GB RAM/SSD/IBM Power 8 24 Core/Nvidia top end 1 series newer than xb3
No matter what I will have all three regardless though.
