Guys the CEll processor can be highly customized the handle graphics, even better so than the PS3's sub-par built in Graphics Card, in fact the PS3 was originally going to be shipped without a Graphics Card due to this potential, but Sony decided otherwise shortly before the release of the PS3.  Here's a video of the Cell Processor running some basic graphics without any help from a GPU..

People really need to do their research before speaking as if they know whats going on.

There is a otherworldly difference between those graphics and those of Uncharted 3, if they wanted to have games looking like Call of Duty 2 for the entire PS3 generation, then they would have left out of the graphics card, why do you think they finally included it? They HAD to.

"Basically the Cell is more powerful than the CPU and GPU in the Xbox 360 combined", that's funny I've heard many developers say differently.

As a programmer and 3d Artist, I call bullshit on that article.  Please if you don't believe me, tweet to any PS3 exclusive developers, see if they could do what they're doing right now without the GPU.

I direct you to this video sir, Nuaghty Dogs OFFICIAL The Making of Uncharted 2: Among Thieves...

He says "At first we wanted to unload some of the pressure on the GPU by off loading some of the to work onto the cell processor...but we soon realized that the SPU was extremely good at that kind of rendering and we eventually ended up dong it entirely on the SPU do get much cleaner and much smoother graphics..."

Thank you, come again.

*sigh* I'll edit this post later to smack talk you some more, right now I'm a bit to busy.

Also, don't triple post for no reason, there's a edit button for a reason, if you were really that smart, you would have noticed it.

His arrogance is really starting to piss me off now, he is completely clueless and isn't even paying attention to what the video is talking about.

Find me a line in that Uncharted 2 video where he says "We never even touched the GPU, all of the graphics processing was done on the CELL."

you really need to go back to square one and learn the difference between CPU and GPU and what CPU and GPU means.

hint:

GPU = Eyes
CPU = Brain
RAM = Blood
HDD = Fat

No no no.

GPU = Eyes

CPU = Heart

HDD = Brain

RAM = Stomach

PSU = Blood

Motherboard = Skeleton

Lol

well the reason i said Fat for the HDD its because when you are full you can't take any more

RAM because blood is always on circulation , so does the random memory.

Motherboard is skelton yes

CPU is brain because it calculates everything

i say PSU is heart since if that stops the computer will shut down , just like a human body when the heart stops

I don't doubt it's the real time engine. But all the Uncharted games early trailers were too, but the final games always ended up looking different. We see it all the time with trailers. A lot of time the video trailers are "in-engine," but not "in-game," instead rendered offline, resulting in super smooth details that don't exactly look the same when the game ships. The Uncharted 3 E3 trailer looks better than the final game.

I'm sure it will end up looking slightly better than Uncharted 3 or at least more refined. But don't get too hyped about the trailer, it could even be a target of what they hope to achieve. That happens all the time before they start adding in dynamic lighting, AI, scripted animations, etc. It all taxes the hardware and cuts have to be made for gameplay's sake.

Correct.  This is using the 'in-game' engine but it is a cut-scene and not realtime.  This also allows for higher density meshes (the proxy 'hero' character models) are around 80,000 polys versus real-time 40,000.

Haha, they match up pretty well though, too many different choices.

Hopefully the guy who said Naughty Dog only used Cell will understand if we use these analogies, no GPU = blindness.

The game will not look as good in real time gameplay.

it will look so close to be this good, that you can hardly tell the difference.

just look at the uncharted 3 cutscenes, and its gameplay. you can hardly tell any graphical differences, heck, half the time you think you are still watching a cutescene, when its actually gameplay.

so i ensure you, this game will look that good....almost. .... 98% as good

I agree, the difference between the two is pretty much non-existant.  I'm playing through U3 right now, and there have been a few times where I was watching a cut-scene and then for some reason Nate would just stand there, I would go "huh what? Why isn't anything happening?" and realize that the cutscene had ended and returned to gameplay and I didn't even notice the transition.

Oh FFS he is talking about post-proccessing

"Unbelievably, considering that the original Uncharted is still such a beautiful-looking game, almost all of its visual effects were achieved using the RSX graphics chip pretty much in isolation. For Uncharted 2 - and indeed many recent games - Cell is used as a parallel graphics processor working in tandem with the RSX. Tasks traditionally associated with the GPU are passed off to the Cell's SPUs.

What this means in basic terms is more time for the RSX to do its thing while the Cell takes care of the vast majority of Uncharted 2's excellent post-processing effects. Screen space ambient occlusion (SSAO), for example, was all done completely on the Cell."

Software renderers are far to slow compaired to GPUs that is why no major game has used one since 1999.

Also mentioned is the LOD system they started using with U2. Also as shown from page 180 on of this  http://dl.dropbox.com/u/604868/Pangilinan_Erick_Uncharted2ArtDirection.pdf Uncharted 2 already fades out distant objects.

The trailer was an off-line render in engine just like all the Uncharted cut-scenes, just like Uncharted 2/3 trailers/cutscenes, it's not ingame it is in engine confirmed by ND

"In-engine" trailer (Naughty Dog confirmed it was in engine just like The last of us trailer)
