If there's something I'll never miss it's expensive memory cards...

Oh Sony, you were doing so well....
I am really really annoyed by this,as I thought in general they were moving away from proprietary stuff. Their phones (though SE) started supporting MicroSD, I think the cameras use SD, but then the tablet had to have its own proprietary charger, and not work properly with SD cards, and no the PS Vita requires is own cards
The past has shown that unless you have dominance of a market, then proprietary stuff does not work as it is "extra usefulness" does not make up for the higher prices due to lack of competition. This does really really annoy me, though not enough for me to not buy the console. The question is just, shall I get one of the smaller ones, and wait a few years for me to need more space but for the cards to get cheaper?

How does not including a SD/SDHC slot and going with their own proprietary save that much off the system's price? I would assume it saves them some money but it can't be more than a few dollars per system. Surely, the royalties for using SDHC can't be that much. I don't think the mass consumer proved anything. They bought a 360 arcade and then were left with the option of buying a 20 or so GB hard drive for a huge price. It may seem like a decent deal for those that don't download anything, install games, etc but for those that wanted to take full advantage of their system were in a for a huge wake up call. Basically, the consumers are lured in with cheap prices with crappy upgrade options. If anything Nintendo proved that not including a hard drive and going with SD/SDHC storage on the Wii was the far cheaper and superior option than buying a 360 arcade and then buying an official Microsoft hard drive. |
That wasnt my point at all. My point was that the profit on the "mandatory" accessory make up for the lack of profit on the system. And also that the mass consumers prefer buying something cheaper then spend money on the accessory. Funny as it may sound, they will get more sale by selling the system at 249$ + 50$ memory card then by selling the said system at 299$ including on board storage. I stated the Microsoft HDD strategy because its extremely similar. At the era Microsoft released the 360, they could have put an HDD, but it would have mean a higher entry price point as well as profit lost on sale of accessory. It was smart.

Some games do require the cards. For example, the flagship game, Uncharted: Golden Abyss, will require a card. Link |
I already knew that source. By confirmation I meant a source by Sony or a first party dev, not a claim by a media outlet. They dont even state the person they talked with.
So Vita with 3G $299 + a game about $49 + memory $119 = $467!!!
And I still don't understand, this memory only for installing a game or we can save music, pic, and video file in this memory to?
For those asking why Sony didn't stick with PSP format.....piracy. That's the reason.

You don't have the buy the 32gig memory card. Most people will be fine with the 4gig.
The cards are for everything from game saves, game downloads, demos, music, movies...etc
looks like people expected sony to just hand over the vita and run themselves in the red with the losses for pricing it so low... if the price is too high for you don't buy... simple solution...
No biggie. I will buy a 4 GB to start with and wait for the prices to drop just like with the PSP. Those memory sticks were ridiculously priced too but now they are dirt cheap.

Absolutely terrible. I use to hold sony to high esteem, but this makes them no better than Microsoft or Apple in my eyes. Total ripoff.
