Why would a more experienced player need all that info on their controller screen? I really don't see the benefit from having a lot of info on your screen when playing Smash or Mario Kart either, as it'll only break your concentration if you have to swift focus between the controller screen and the tv. I truly hope that Nintendo has bigger plans for the WiiU controller than Racing game GPS's or char sheets...otherwise I'm out. The biggest issue I see is with 4 player local multiplayer Co-op games that makes great use of the tablet screen. That's a fairly limited category though. This is a bit off-topic perhaps, but the greatest feature of the WiiU controller imo is the ability to make games where one player takes the role as a "Dungeon Master". And if you have two tablets you could make advanced Counter-Op modes in Single player games where a second player takes command of the enemy. |
Those were just quick examples I pulled off the top of my head. But if you are right, and Nintendo has bigger features to implement with the tablet, then that stresses my point even more. People are not going to want those features gimped just because they play with more than one friend. And on the flip side, no one is going to want to be the one to play with the old controls, since they won't have those features.
Also, I have other reasons why I feel the Wii U may not be a huge success (most of which have nothing to do with the controller), but those have nothing to do with the controller issue, so don't really belong in this thread.

It may be silly for you, but it may be a legitimate concern for many come launch day. We will see. |
I dont see a problem for gamers. because gamers are hardcore. They use online, meaning each will have their own system.. Lan is for kids remember.
I seriously don't know many people who lan on a ps3, most go online for cod and madden to get the full screen benefit.
Nintendo's challenge is to get an awesome online network.

I am still not sure what exactly you mean. An actual example to explain it in a practical sense wouldn't hurt. Then you say that the Wii is the basis for the Wii U, meaning that's how the games will developed. As in, the Wii U controller won't be really utilized anyway, so nobody's going to be at a disadvantage, regardless of the controller they use. |
When I say the basis, I mean like a starting point. Of course, I think Nintendo plans to take full advantage of the tablet controller, especially in single-player games, but they are really limiting themselves by using the same old Wii-motes for the other controllers. This means games will have to be developed around the lowest common denomenator, the Wii-mote, which as I said will gimp the implementation of the actual Wii U tablet in multiplayer games. And I'm not sure what you need an example of.
The way Nintendo should have approached this was to build the system around a minimum of 2 tablets, with an ulitmate goal of supporting 4. Instead, it seems Nintendo wanted to get in on the recent tablet craze, as well as get their system out first, so they just threw in minimum support of 1. Only after much negativity on the internet did Nintendo decide to try and support 2 tablet controllers. So far, we have no idea if they will pull it off. And if they do, if it will cause performeance issues, or a drop in graphical ability. Of course, for my argument, I decided to pretend they have been able to do it.
Not every game will have to use the WiiU controller, some kind of games will get a benefit from it, some others won't. When it comes to classic 4-player IPs, those will likely remain TV-centric. Other types of game, like FPS co-op will use the tablet controller or both tablets and wiimotes in asimmetrical gameplay concepts.
Nintendo is lazy. They better provide a better option than the Wii mote and nunchuk or else they will suffer the fate of consumers seeing it as another Wii. There has to be an update of those motion controls to better resemble the accuracy of the PlayStation Move.

Lazy is a strong word. Complacent? sure, they have motion+ but they dont support the damn thing. I think i can count the motion+ compatible games Ninty made on one hand. While i need at least two for Move or Kinect. And motion+ has been out far longer, its pathetic.

Actually, that may become a problem. Not a major one, mind you, but still a problem. Given the console has a similar look to the Wii, as well as being called Wii U (instead of Wii 2 or an original name), some out of the gaming loop who see it still uses the old Wii-motes may think it is just Wii redesign with a new controller. The same thing happened to the 3DS when it first launched. It's similar design to the DS, plus the name 3DS, brought some to believe it was just a redesign of the DS with 3D. Hopefully, Nintendo will have better launch advertising to get the point across that it is, in fact, a new console.
I think that the problem in playing with more than 2 controllers is due to the stream of the game on both controllers. If the information, during multiplayer, for example, is kept to a minimum like in SSF4 3D, i doubt that even if 4 Wii U controllers, sharing that amount of data, will strain the console.
The real question only lies on those 4 player games like Mario Kart and SSB, for example, but even than we are supposing that there will be too much data to process given by 4 controllers. Because, if there`s no stream of any kind, it won`t matter if they are playing with this or that controller.
