Nintendo 3DS: Nintendo Explains Why Star Fox 64 3D Didn’t Feature Online Multiplayer, Next Star Fox Probably Will

Nintendo’s Yusuke Amano has explained to the Official Nintendo Magazine why Nintendo neglected to include an online mode for Star Fox 64 3D on the Nintendo 3DS. Amano cited cost and time constraints as the reasoning behind the lack of online multiplayer support, but he says future iterations of the franchise could include online multiplayer.

“Personally, I play a lot of online FPS games,” began Amano. “This leads me to think that just making multiplayer parts of existing games playable online isn’t enough to create a satisfying experience for users. The popular online games work in lots of things, so they play well online – and if we wanted to satisfy everyone who bought the game, the costs required for including online support would be vast.”

“For this project what we needed to do was use Star Fox to provide users with a game that shows the appeal of Nintendo 3DS as quickly as possible. We put a lot of effort into the graphics, and if we had included online support then we couldn’t have reached this level in the time allowed.”

“We didn’t cut any corners for the multiplayer mode in this game. We did lots of experimentation for the normal wireless local multiplayer and included lots of new features. Working on the multiplayer part was a nice, satisfying challenge, and if I get the chance to work on another Star Fox title, I would definitely consider an online multiplayer mode.”

I could have sworn I saw a trailer for an online mode for Star Fox 64, but I guess I was mistaken.

Local multiplayer with video chat...

Monster Hunter: pissing me off since 2010.

So, they decided to focus on graphics and local multiplayer instead?

Okay. Star Fox would not be very fun to play online anyway. It's more about tight levels and occasional light-hearted local multiplayer.

Love and tolerate.

Oh come one, I call BS on this one. They didnt add online multiplayer because they needed to release the game in time. They knew they have a light software lineup, so they cut corners and rushed the game out. IMO if they decided to release it early next year, they could have added online multiplayer, and release a far more complete package.

While I understand their reasoning, I still think that's a big mistake. For a company that's trying to prove it has something to offer the core gamer with 3DS and WiiU this shows a total lack of understanding of what that audience wants. Nintendo has to realize if it wants the core, it's going to have to massively expand and shell out millions to get it. Frankly, I don't think that's a winning strategy. Nintendo's done great with the expanded market and I think they should remained focused there but then drop the pretense of serving the core gamer.

One thing about Nintendo: online isnt a top priority.

Its a shame really, many amazing Nintendo games I played would be great with it.

Xbox: Best hardware, Game Pass best value, best BC, more 1st party genres and multiplayer titles.

Yeah did u see that video chat in the commercial?? It looked like a 0.3 megapixle camera with about 2 FPS. It was absolutely aweful.

local multiplayer with video chat?... lol can anybody really explain to me what the point of that is?... i mean if you wanted to converse with your buddy while playing locally couldn't you just look up at him from the screen?

If you look up from the screen you'll probably get hit, plus if you're facing him in the room his face is usually behind his 3DS.

Lacking in online is dumb though. I thought they realized that.

imo the resources they wasted in a totally useless feature like local video chat should have been spent on online modes
