If you look up from the screen you'll probably get hit, plus if you're facing him in the room his face is usually behind his 3DS.

Lacking in online is dumb though. I thought they realized that.

imo the resources they wasted in a totally useless feature like local video chat should have been spent on online modes

the interactive nature of those features make them current and relevant, even a selling point, but not at the expense of something the core community is looking for with much more interest. Most of us are competitive and we like the online mode for that.

excuse me for not seeing the value in a feature allowing you to see someone on screen thats probably just across the room from you...

WHY THE HELL DO YOU NEED VIDEO CHAT FOR LOCAL PLAY???

nevermind

“When we make some new announcement and if there is no positive initial reaction from the market, I try to think of it as a good sign because that can be interpreted as people reacting to something groundbreaking. ...if the employees were always minding themselves to do whatever the market is requiring at any moment, and if they were always focusing on something we can sell right now for the short term, it would be very limiting. We are trying to think outside the box.” - Satoru Iwata - This is why corporate multinationals will never truly understand, or risk doing, what Nintendo does.

Nintendo’s Yusuke Amano has explained to the Official Nintendo Magazine why Nintendo neglected to include an online mode for Star Fox 64 3D on the Nintendo 3DS. Amano cited cost and time constraints as the reasoning behind the lack of online multiplayer support, but he says future iterations of the franchise could include online multiplayer.

“Personally, I play a lot of online FPS games,” began Amano. “This leads me to think that just making multiplayer parts of existing games playable online isn’t enough to create a satisfying experience for users. The popular online games work in lots of things, so they play well online – and if we wanted to satisfy everyone who bought the game, the costs required for including online support would be vast.”

“For this project what we needed to do was use Star Fox to provide users with a game that shows the appeal of Nintendo 3DS as quickly as possible. We put a lot of effort into the graphics, and if we had included online support then we couldn’t have reached this level in the time allowed.”

“We didn’t cut any corners for the multiplayer mode in this game. We did lots of experimentation for the normal wireless local multiplayer and included lots of new features. Working on the multiplayer part was a nice, satisfying challenge, and if I get the chance to work on another Star Fox title, I would definitely consider an online multiplayer mode.”

Well he pretty much aknowledges Nintendo cut corners with StarFox64. He clearly says that the product wouldn't be ready in time and it would cost  vast amount of money to do. I think Nintendo was desperate to get the title out had the 3DS not done so poorly at launch I am sure Nintendo would have taken a little longer and added online.

In fact I'm betting origionally Nintendo had plans for online. The features they included in local multiplayer resemble what we'd expect to find in an online game. It's funny that he says "For this project what we needed to do was use Star Fox to provide users with a game that shows the appeal of Nintendo 3DS as quickly as possible." lol isn't online gameplay one of the biggest features that gamers will find appealing. I mean Nintendo continues to appeal for support of the eShop and of their online features. Yet this title which is supposed to show off the appeal of 3DS lacks one of its most appealing features.

Good job Nintendo show everyone how appealing the 3DS is by giving it a straight port that doesn't offer anything other then 3D to show us the appeal of the 3DS.

why are people crying about online. Must everygame have it these games. I bought the game and like it,but I don't need online for every single game. It's not as big of a deal,as you guys are making it out to be.

Starfox 64 has shit multiplayer anyway. 3DS Games like Mario Kart and Smash Bros need online. But seriously multiplayer in Starfox just feels added on for the sake of multiplayer. Free-roam mode is the weakest part of the game.

Local multiplayer with video chat? That actually is brilliant imo. It is a feature more games should add. Does it pick up sound too?
