Forums - Nintendo - Any word on the 3DS cut effect on initial sales?

I heard many people saying that with this 3DS price cut the PS Vita is dead on arrival.

Sony just has to focus on not screwing anything up, and putting out good games and they will be fine.  Nintendo has a cheap console and a bunch of Mario games coming out, nothing Sony can do about it.  Luckily the launch is sounding pretty decent, so there is hope...

With Android tablets continuously becoming cheaper and more powerful; handheld gaming is becoming more hostile for both the 3DS and Vita. Thankfully, the 3DS has the glasses-free 3D as their selling point; as well as a mainstream price. Things are not looking good for the Vita in my opinion as it must compete with a cheaper and more established 3DS; along with powerful and capable tablets coming and currently in the market.

FYI...I too just picked up the 3DS as the price was just wayyyyy tooo good to pass up (I believe $250 is too pricey for any gaming handheld like 3DS, PSP, and PSV) especially since it released a remastered OoT in 3D glory!

But in the UK its £120 for a DS and £140 for a 3DS, add on the massive in store promos and TV ad campaign and there is no doubt in my mind that here at least DS sales will collapse.

I guess the DS Lite hasn't received an official price drop like in the USA then (where it is $99). I just checked a couple of retailers and they have it at about €130 (DSi €150, XL €170).

Yes, in that case there could indeed be a more notable effect on DS sales, because there's no ultra cheap option like in America.

Actually I got that wrong...

Dsi is £110 to £140 dependant on colour (!?)

3DS  is £140

crazy pricing strategy

DSi is 110 pounds, DSiXL is 140 pounds. Dependent on screen size

It will be interesting to see how it holds up. This pricecut should add significantly to its base sales, combined with actually getting some decent game releases the 3DS will probably actually have a fairly strong first holiday.

3DS sales, despite the negative publicity, weren't exactly terrible before the pricecut (they just weren't staggeringly good, esp not by nintendo's recent standards)
I'm fairly certain it was just a price factor for many and this'll give the machine the boost it needs and desereves until the christmas season kicks in and decent games start hitting the shelf then it'll go ballistic...by this time next year this slight hiccup in nintendo's resume will be forgotten (am I the only person who seems to remember waiting something like a year for anything good to come out for the original ds? and even then it was something like 'YOSHI's TOUCH and GO'!!! Kids today bitching about lack of quality games in launch lineups don't know how lucky they've got it!!!! WHY I ORTA!!!!)

Well all weekend i saw people buying 3DS in teh Uk, soem store give them away at £149.99 plus a free game.

I have just sold mine to save moeny for the red one on teh 9th of September.

Still lots of confusion though, most people (especially kids) wanted the XL still cause they thought no ds game could be played on the 3DS.

they wanted to play mario that's why they picked up a ds XL.

Hopefully when a proper Mario is out, no one would need a ds lite, i or XL anymore.

Switch!!!

well i usually love contributing to these threads but alas, i didn't go to the store this weekend so i have nothing.

it is "good" to hear sales are picking up. still curious to see if it lasts, we all remember how 3DS first week sales broke all sorts of records and then disappointed from week 2 on.

Now that Nintendo has the right price, they just need the right games. They need to launch a New Super Mario Bros Game exclusive for the 3ds, maybe a New Super Mario World based on the Snes game (Please Nintendo), Pokemon Red and Blue Remakes, and a ton of brain training games. If nintendo can do this the new price can do wonders for the 3ds.

and it will do wonders.... Super mario Land 3DS is enough for the moment... I would not mind later in 2012 a 3D port for Super Mario land 1 & 2.

That would be awsome.

Switch!!!

this is what happens when Nintendo, holds back software to allow 3rd parties to flourish on the system. they get a bunch of rayman, dinosaur whatever from shovelware maker Ubisoft. honestly, besides LoZ:OoT none of the 3rd party knows how to properly use 3D on the 3DS!!! System is at least 2x more powerful than the Wii and they give us shovelware like those...pathetic!!! The price-cut along with Nintendo software will boost sales b4 PSV comes out (another handheld that's likely to get a price-cut a few months after release); but would keep Nintendo in dangerous grounds for the 1st time since the early months of the DS vs PSP era!!!
