Forums - Nintendo - This is not DS,this is Nintendo 3DS - new ad clarifies things

Why so much hate for this console?

I still do not understand.

everything they are doing with the 3DS is wrong for most of the people in here, so why care in the first place?

^Any idea WHY?
You seem to talk about Nintendo losing their way a lot, why change the formula?

Did any of Nintendo's most successful games of the last few years get any honest praise from the industry? No. The Wii and DS as a whole? No, the industry looked down on these devices and developing for the Wii was a big no among top developers. Should all this matter to Nintendo when consumers love their products regardless? No.

But apparently it does.

The 3DS and Wii U were/are made to appease the industry, because Nintendo wants to be loved by them. This decision is made on a purely emotional level and has nothing to do with business sense. Why else would you change a successful formula? As a business it shouldn't bother Nintendo, if others say that they don't make cutting edge products or that their products are backwards. The success gave Nintendo right, after all.

We've seen the same thing in reverse from the industry all these past years. From a business perspective it didn't really make much sense to not support the Wii properly, but from an emotional perspective it was the right thing to do. The industry has formed a hive mind and is hostile to gamers who do not fit their world view.

Ha, that kinda differs from what I'm thinking. My stance on this (mainly WiiU) is that it's being made in order to get a huge piece of that 3rd party pie and not get left out there, and give its owners pretty much every game they can expect, with 3rd party exclusives being pretty much out of the window... regardless of it being successful or not. But with the way it looks, I think that I'm saying what you're saying in different words... I.E it's there to please third parties and make them work for Nintendo.

But I do wonder about whats going on in Iwata's head.

@disolitude: eh... I guess nostalgia got you there. Back when the jaguar came out, I was like... 2... or 3...

Why do they even bother to show MGS3? That game is going to get canceled for sure.

Anyway, people already knew what the 3DS is. That's why it isn't selling.

Lately when I read your comments I get these flashes of a rope, a noose and a chair.

Note to self: Do not, under any circumstances, engage Roland in a Nintendo debate. His power level is too high.

SECONDED!

I think I'd rather take on Richard Dawkins about God and evolution before trying the above!

Is SImon Pegg the voiceover?

I hope ads like that make it to the U.S.. I also hope that's just one of a series of ads showing the differences and improvements between the DS and 3DS.

-another ad could show AR games and Motion controls
-another ad could show Nintendo franchises and virtual console
-another ad could show Netflix, 3D pictures, Spot Pass, and Nintendo Video

Obviously, this ad is an attempt to diffuse any momentum that the PSV would be garnering if it were coming out this year. Showing games that PSV fans would like (Metal Gear, Resident Evil, Street Fighter) with awesome graphics--what other reason could there have been?

Erm what? Those graphics especially when watched at huge 40-50" LCD TV look nothing special.

And if you are targetting PSV totting that you have 1 analog stick is like shooting owngoal ;)

1.) My 3DS doesn't have a 40-50 inch screen.  When I play SSF4 or RE Mercs on it, it looks almost like a current gen HD console.  Most of the people I've shown 3DS games to get blown away by the graphics.  The PSV's will look better, there's no doubt about that.  I think the goal of this commercial is to show that the 3DS is no graphical slouch, either.  It's, at the very least, a huge step up from the apparent power of the PSP.  On a handheld, sn't that special?

2.) I think they were just showing that it had analog, whereas the original DS did not.  I didn't mean to imply that they were tareting the PSV on a technical level.  I meant to say that they were targeting the PSV by showing the kinds of games that a PSV fan might be interested in--ie showing Ridge Racer, Metal Gear, Resident Evil, and Street Fighter.  They didn't show Starfox, Kid Icarus, Mario Kart, or any number of Nintendo games for a reason.

My guess is that they expected the PSV to come out this holiday season and that they needed to counter its buzz.  How do you do that?  The same way Xbox went up against the PS3--show that they have a similar experience with the same franchises available already.

Why didn't Ninty hire Chef Tony, instead?

Doesn't feel like a Nintendo ad at all. Why the sudden change in strategy? I don't think graphics is what sold the DS, and if they're trying to compete with graphics, then Vita has the advantage. Also, if they're going to focus on the hardcore, why not mention the 3D? I just don't get it...

Here's the thought process:

1) Advertise 3D as the major feature of your new handheld system.

2) System doesn't sell. Must be because people think that it's just a new DS model with 3D.

3) Make it clear that it is indeed a new system and not just a new DS model with 3D. Forget about 3D, but instead point out other things that differentiate the 3DS from the DS. Better graphics, a generational leap, being the most obvious aspect.

In the end Nintendo has a wrong perception of the market. But before they are going to accept this, they will try out everything in hopes to prove their current perception correct. This can of course lead to some bizarre things and I think the worst is yet to come.

I guess. It's also possible that they think they're losing the casual market to smartphone gaming (though I think the would be overestimating its importance) and want to go upmarket.
