Here's the thought process: 1) Advertise 3D as the major feature of your new handheld system. 2) System doesn't sell. Must be because people think that it's just a new DS model with 3D. 3) Make it clear that it is indeed a new system and not just a new DS model with 3D. Forget about 3D, but instead point out other things that differentiate the 3DS from the DS. Better graphics, a generational leap, being the most obvious aspect. In the end Nintendo has a wrong perception of the market. But before they are going to accept this, they will try out everything in hopes to prove their current perception correct. This can of course lead to some bizarre things and I think the worst is yet to come. |
I guess. It's also possible that they think they're losing the casual market to smartphone gaming (though I think the would be overestimating its importance) and want to go upmarket.
