Forums - Gaming - So. 3DS vs Vita, now what?

So 3DS is doomed because now the PSV is going to launch at a similar price and with bigger features.  So what?  I have yet to find a compelling argument to go against buying 3DS.  Also, two major 3rd party games for Vita?  I'm sorry, but that seems a bit... strange, as far as I can tell.

The sad thing is we'll probably forget the Vita even exists this afternoon during the Nintendo presser.  Plus let's face it, Nintendo's 1st party on handhelds is NUTS and will NEVER be something Sony could even hope to compete with.

so this debate is how nintendos legacy franchises will be called up to try and beat the vita which is using franchises set up in the past 3-5 years or so?
sounds like a win for vita.
imagine what will happen when new MGS, GT and god of war titles are announced for vita

Age of franchises in human years:

  • 24 Metal Gear
  • 24 Street Fighter
  • 18 Ridge Racer
  • 17 Tekken
  • 16 Wipeout
  • 14 Dynasty Warriors
  • 14 Everybody's Golf
  • 14 Gran Turismo
  • 12 Silent Hill
  • 8   Call of Duty
  • 7   Killzone
  • 6   God of War
  • 5   Resistance
  • 4   BioShock
  • 4   Uncharted
  • 3   LittleBigPlanet

It's just got a whole lot more interesting, that's for sure. And honestly, I can't see Nintendo cutting the price this year. They'll try bundling and getting more software on the market first, price cuts is a very last resort.

I also think it's very interesting to note that Capcom said they would be turning their attention away from Wii and 3DS in favor of the PS3 and 360. Will this mean we see Monster Hunter on Vita? It would seem it might be not be set for the 3DS at least.

It'll be very interesting to see what happens in the holidays. Call of Duty could be a huge booster for Vita, I hope it will work.

What do those numbers mean?

well it certainly is interesting, price came in slightly under what i expected. i though $250 for the wifi and $350 for the 3G models.

but while this is interesting i'm still not sure about the future. both system's lineups suck imo right now, especially at the cost of hardware and especially games. feels like a midget fight and apple/android are sitting on the sidelines laughing.

if i had to guess i'd put both the 3DS and Vita ~60-70M lifetime sales which isn't terribly impressive on either account.

It is how old the franchises are in human years.

Oh!! :D
Thanks.

The price point is surprisingly impressive, but I'd imagine it comes down to software. As much as some might love Sony first party, it's as good as irrelevant compared to Nintendo's. Even third parties don't compare so I'd think that Nintendo really needs to do little more than launch Pokemon, Mario Kart and 2D Mario, all of which are practically inevitable, to win this.

I still see 3DS beating Vita by more than DS did PSP, but I've been wrong before, :O.

Hmm, Vita does look like a better value proposition now. I still have too many questions to really predict a sales winner.... like battery life. Let us also not forget that 3DS looked pretty unstoppable (remember all the "insane launch games talk?) during its coming out party. If Nintendo cuts the price by 50 dollars and bundles it (lets say with Mario Kart, although I wouldn't mind something like Pilot Wings) just in time for Vita launch, it would be a much more tempting purchase.

I think Nintendo dropped the ball by not including a second analog stick. I personally love using the thumb strap for aiming (you can still pick one up at Nintendo.com btw) but most people do not. It'll cost them the shooter crowd for sure.

Personally, I'm sticking with my 3DS.... I like Sony's 1st party, but I'll be okay only playing Uncharted on my giant HD tv. On the other hand, I would hate to miss a 2D Mario (once again, this is just me.) It's also waaaaaay too big. Love the DS form factor, it's small and portable enough to pocket, and the clamshell protects the screen. I already carry way too much on me (Tablet, Phone, etc) and the VIta would be the straw the broke the camels back. Besides, I'm not much of a playing a portable at home type of gamer. (Cafe might also prove to be a better "home portable...we'll find out soon.)

If Capcom puts Monster Hunter on Vita, and Call of Duty becomes a big hit on it too, then you have two extremely heavy hitter franchises working in favor of Sony. Nintendo isn't in the clear here.

And what's your definition of winning by the way? Outselling the Vita? Outselling the DS? Having two thirds of the marketshare between the two?
