PS2 sold as much as it did because it had no competition?

No, PS2 sold as much as it did because it brought the thing that mattered most. Games.

Wii won't outsell the PS2 because as of right now it is not bringing that which matters most. Games.

Do we discount the PS1 as well because of "no competition"?  Please answer this one

Um no....PS2 had no competition. And the Wii is up against. 360, PS3.

PS1 only had to deal with Sega Saturn....massive competition. I mean it sold a whopping 9.5 Million.

And where the heck do you see me discount sales........Please answer this one

Oh, so the Saturn wasn't competition, neither was the N64? You say this even though the SNES and Genesis were both top of the line consoles the previous generation?

Consoles don't get discounted just because they end up offering what the others do not and in turn blow them away sales wise.

Same for PS2. You don't suddenly get to undermine how great it truly was just because the competition couldn't keep up.

If me and you went to the starting line to get ready to race, guess what, you are my competitor.

That doesn't change just because you failed to clear the first hurdle.

I also didn't say you were discounting sales. You are seemingly trying to make you case of the Wii being the best of all time because it sold as much as it did while failing to step on the throats of it's competitors when it was at one point outselling them both combined.

You are intitled to your opinion, but your reasoning for it is very flawed.

Ah, got a new one for ya!!

Let us say the Cafe releases and PS3 and 360 stay on the market.

Now let us say the Wii ends up dying out shortly after the Cafe releases and the PS3 continues to sell.

Now let us say that not only does the PS3 continue to sell, but due to being in developing markets it actually ends up passing the Wii or at least "see the PS3 knocking on the Wii's door", would that make you think PS3 is the greatest console of all time?

Also what if the new Kinect lineup breathes new life into the 360 and that too ends up "knocking on the Wii's door"?

Could the 360 end up being, in your opinion of course, the best console of all time? O_o

Anybody going to ban this guy for 3 weeks?

Oh...Didn't think so.

Anyway, this was a good read. The Wii might have been the fastest selling but in the long run it is going to lose a LOT of ground. I wish Nintendo had put stronger hardware in the Wii, at least powerful enough to starve off their next console until 2013 instead of starting the next generation prematurely.

I still think the Wii is too expensive, infact I think ALL home consoles are still to expensive and they are being overpriced, just look at the price of the Gamecube, XBOX and PS2, after a few years they were sub £100 / $150 (can't confirm that, might be wrong).

Why would he be banned? He didn't do anything wrong, if anything, you should be.

OMG....SNES and Genisis were 4th Gen Consoles they have nothing to do with PS1. The Saturn failed in many ways and N64 was released 1 year after PS1. So yes, it had no competition.

"Do we discount the PS1 as well".....so yes you are implying i was discounting sales...lolz

And by the way the Wii did step on their throats

I never thought you were biased, I just think your view on what makes a console the best of all time is flawed and I stated just that.

To me it always comes down to games and games only.

And why does that make revenue important at all. If you spend tons of money making a game and it doesn't sell, you have massive revenue, but negative profit. Whereas a small budget title that breaks even will be sucessfull even though the revenue was small.

All revenue will tell you is where companies put most of their recources. Why is this important? Just becuase a market has bigger amounts of cash flowing through it one direction or the other doesn't mean anything when profits and other factors, like number of customers are not taken into account. Even the analogy you made was about profits and not revenue (It's harder to profit with a cheaper price tag).

So I ask you again, why is revenue important?

Revenue per game matters. If you can sell a game for $60 vs $40 on the Wii it makes a significant difference. Once you take away publishing expenses and retailer margins the actual margin per game sold @ $40 is aproximately half that of the game sold @ $60. If you were making 2* the margin on the HD consoles and selling aproximately twice as many copies on top of that then it would explain your desire to continue selling those kinds of games.

But that is also, fundementally about profit. It's a no brainer that selling games at a higher price gives more profit, and simultaniously more revenue, if all other factors such as publishing and manufacturing and development remains constant. (Or are we talking strictly about revenue with the development out of the picture?)

but when looking at a market's health at a macro scale, as I said, profits are of the most interrest, because that's where the sucess of the business lies.

When looking at the biggest picture, and taking development costs into account, you have high development costs and high margins on the HD consoles, so it may balance out, it may not. My point is, with things looking that way, when looking at revenue of course the HD console graphs would be much higher, because more cash flows through those markets, but it would be misleading when gauging how sucessful the markets are. That's why I think "Those graphs would look different if Nintnedo dared to show revenue" is a misleading statement. Of course the graphs would be higher, but they would not have much information. Revenue could come only from companies expenses and not from sales.

A chart with revenue/Profits chart/(Profits - revenue) graphs for each software market would be interresting though, since it would measure both how much customers spend in each market plus how sucessful the software businesses are.

@ Italized #1

Why did PS2's release and just blow away the Dreamcast despite releasing first? Couldn't have been due to the success of the PS1 according to what you say in the post I am quoting.

@ Italized #2

1 year lead means nothing.

Dreamcast released first and PS2 blew it away.

360 released a year earlier and the Wii then blew it away, plus it has a chance to get beaten by the PS3 as well. So it may end up losing to 2 consoles in 1 generation despite having a 1 year lead.

@Italized #3

If Wii stepped on their throats they wouldn't both be outselling it WW on a weekly basis while being the cheapest of the 3. Nor would it have to also cut it's price just to stay competitive.

Didn't the Saturn release first too? That would make 3 straight generations where the one who released first ended up losing.
