I love how people just don't give the Wii the respect it deserves. Here are a few facts that people completly over look.

1) The PS2 was the 1st, 6th Generation Console to be released. It had a Year and 1 Month sales lead on either Xbox or the GameCube. The PS2 had absolutly no competition againt it. Thats one reason why it's numbers are so high.

2) The Wii on the other hand was released at the same time as the PS3, 1 Year after the 360. We are talking about a Console that was way behind in technology, and had 2 current Generation Consoles to contend with. And was still able to outsell them. Theres no wonder the Wii cant catch up to the PS2 sales, the PS2 had a massive advantage. But even seeing the Wii knock at the PS2's door is absolutly amazing, thats what makes it.....in my opinion.....the greatest console ever made.

Sales does not make it the greatest console ever made.

The Wii is only so popular because it's target audience ISN'T the typical hardcore gamer.

While I do think it is underrated by hardcore gamers because they say "it's just a kids console", it still doesn't deserve the sales just because it's the latest trendy Christmas present.

Partly false, its market doesn't have have typical hardcore gamers, because 3rd parties chose to not bring those games over.

Had the first years of the Wii been given the same 3rd party games with only losses to HD visuals, Wii would gained the core gamer as well.

However, 3rd parties were short sighted in the beginning and then decided to not spend the money to make their engines Wii friendly as they were comfortable with PS360/PC userbase and created their own self-fulling logic of who the Wii market was and was not.

you're making the assuption that "hardcore gamers" would give up the graphics, a control scheme more suited to some types of games, superior online support etc... in my opnion your assuption is wrong

If they weren't willing to give that up....

all hardcore gamers would be playing on PCs right now.

The real "dirty secret" of gaming that people don't want to admit too?

CoD and GTA are casual.

Nitendo didn't target casual gamers anymore then anyone else.  What they targeted were different gamers and people who were getting bored of regular gaming.  People up for innovation.

Edit: Found it.  Interesting, didn't realize it was still over PS2.

Also didn't realize that the "decline" was so similar to each console.

The big issue though is that a new Nintendo console is coming soon, while PS3 took forever to come out... and was also "expensive as balls."

I miss having these charts on VGchartz.  What's Nintendo's expecting shipping total this year?  Below where PS2 was right?

Wii actually doing a lot better then what I thought.

this is what i was thinking is that pc gaming has turned into a dirty little secret but yet more and more and even gaming mags are starting to realize pc gaming is making a full on return. and its not cause of graphics its cause the games are wayyy behind the advancements of the pc hardware to where you can build a pc (my pc is already 2 years old) with semi old tech (the hardware in mine was a year old already) and make a gaming pc to where you just add ram and your good to go for 6 plus years. my pc might have 3 year old tech in it but ive yet to find any game graphically that can drag down the pc. ive maxed out the demo of medal of honor the new one. now tell me this why does the pc have to be dirty secret when people game on pc's and there are roughly billions of pc gamers out there but yet as on here no where do i see the comparison of a pc version against a ps3/360 version like portal 2 i bet sold as much or more then the two consoles combined. and is still selling at an incredible rate.

I meant the dirty secret was that CoD and GTA were casual.  Any "super successful" game is really a casual game because the majority of it's sales are going to people who only buy 4 games a year max.

Though yeah, a decent PC lasts you a LOT longer then it did.  Espiecally stuff like steam that makes it so much easier to legacy play.

Also fun about PC is it's a bit more of a meritocracy.

You don't really have a built in preference towards a company's products because they also made you console.

Seriously whats with the huge chunk of shitty opinion below that article alfredofroylan.  Users like this should be banned.  Post facts and that's it, leave your god damned opinions out of it.  He friggen blended his opinion in with the actual article...  The real article is quite positive towards Nintendo.

I say the sales jump back to number 1 spot again next chart as that's where the price cut happened.  Of course sales will dip particularly low just before a price cut.  What idiot would buy a 200 dollar console a week before it gets 50 dollars cheaper.  In truth for the last month the sales have been artificially low because of that incoming price drop.

The Wii is a great console IMO.  If Sony and Microsoft had been left alone, I think we would have had another video game crash.  No console in the past has been this expensive.  The Nintendo Wii is actually exactly where it should be for this console generation.  The original NES was less than 200 dollars, The N64 was something like 250 dollars.  I would sooner compare the PS3 and 360 with the atari Jaguar than I would a next gen console.... If they did what they were supposed to then they would only be a little more powerful than the Wii themselves and we wouldn't have had the Red Ring of Death or massive power requirements, noisy fans, oversized, ludicrously expensive, hard to develop for, developer bankrupting consoles like those.

Around the Network

I'm just going to avoid getting into the arguments in this thread and just say that the Wii is doing a lot better than I expected and that most people give it credit for.

We will see what the PS3 and Xbox360 will get in their last two (one?) years. But as a matter of fact now: The Wii has the best games of all all three consoles this gen, I don't liked FF13, or GTA4 or Halo Killzone 3 or most of the shallow blockbusters the PS360 mostly got (get). Mario Galaxy, Silent Hill: Shattered Memories, Zelda, Fragile Dreams, Metroid Prime 3, Other M, Paper Mario, etc. are a way above that.

Yes, the Wii is the console of a new generation of (casual-)gamers but also a must have for every real core gamer.

Nintendo may support the system for a long time but I think the fact that Wii's successor is so close to launch might make it difficult for it to reach PS2 sales

Then again, you never know :p

Indeed, just like the 3DS killed off DS sales, and the PS3 killed off the PS2.

You made me read through 9 pages of posts for this?!

I AGREE WITH YOU!

But that is also, fundementally about profit. It's a no brainer that selling games at a higher price gives more profit, and simultaniously more revenue, if all other factors such as publishing and manufacturing and development remains constant. (Or are we talking strictly about revenue with the development out of the picture?)

but when looking at a market's health at a macro scale, as I said, profits are of the most interrest, because that's where the sucess of the business lies.

When looking at the biggest picture, and taking development costs into account, you have high development costs and high margins on the HD consoles, so it may balance out, it may not. My point is, with things looking that way, when looking at revenue of course the HD console graphs would be much higher, because more cash flows through those markets, but it would be misleading when gauging how sucessful the markets are. That's why I think "Those graphs would look different if Nintnedo dared to show revenue" is a misleading statement. Of course the graphs would be higher, but they would not have much information. Revenue could come only from companies expenses and not from sales.

A chart with revenue/Profits chart/(Profits - revenue) graphs for each software market would be interresting though, since it would measure both how much customers spend in each market plus how sucessful the software businesses are.

It isn't a misleading statement to say that revenue per title is important. Revenue comes from the price of sale * number of units sold. If third parties don't have as much revenue on the Wii then it shows where the most profit potential for third parties lies and thus where they would focus the majority of their development efforts. As we don't get per platform breakdowns for profit it can only be assumed that the third parties would attempt to maximise their own profits on the most profitable platforms which follows that they focus the majority of their development resources on the HD consoles.

Tease.

every console is more or less dead in Japan, so who cares for Japan other than Japanese games

the article is true, the Wii has zero software is still selling not far below Ps3/Xbox360

it will get back there when Nintendo releases more games and price cut

Cafe won't kill it as price will be much lower until then and people will still be buying the Wii to play Ninty's AAA games

don't mind my username, that was more than 10 years ago, I'm a different person now, amazing how people change ^_^
