Forums - Sales - I don't understand.. why is the PS3 on top now?

No, games are only half of the equation! IT HAS A FRICKEN BLU-RAY DRIVE!

I will wait for adjustments ;)

It is simply the exclusive games that are on the system.

The numbers might drop a bit next week - you never know - i'm also a bit supprised.

on the other hand Sony handing out incentives to PSN users could increase sales. you get 2 free games if your a PSN user- does this mean people will buy a PS3 and sign up for PSN just to get the games.

however i'm not sure it will work like this - but i dont see why Sony wouldnt reward all PSN users, even if they only just bought a PS3.

It's only outisde of america where the ps3 dominates...if it wasn't for the 360's abysmal japan numbers, it would be the number one console worldwide...

You guys are wrong about the games and stuff.

Its because PS3 has the bump in foreign countries.

Every country knows Sony as a good brand, no one probably trusts the american brand game system and loads of those countries love Japan and dont really care for the good old USA.

So its become cool again, where? Japan? Veuseawhela?

Certainly not America where it gets tromped.

So no, its not about the games, or the thing becoming cool again.

Its about the Sony brand having a strong presence in other countries along with Japan supporting their home made product.

Because it came after the highest selling console of all time and because Sony has excellent logistics especially in 2nd/3rd world markets where Microsoft/Nintendo barely have the same presence. You have to remember that the PS2 has sold 36 million since the PS3 was out in addition to another 120 million before the release of the PS3.

This sums up what I was going to say.

Outside of America... where 6.9 billion people live. If it wasn't for 360s strong American sales it would be dead last???

You can't have a brand without important games though, so I doubt there isn't at least some truth to the games bit. Getting beaten in one region also doesn't indicate that the games have no impact. In EMEAA & JP, quite a bit of titles help with weekly console sales (even if for just a week or two). The PS3 is the only console that's seen a steady stream of exclusive titles throughout the year and I'm willing to bet that's playing a role.

So brand name is definitely a factor, but brand name alone can't get you as far as the PS3 has come without games (it's early performance should be an indicator).

I agree with you. Yes, having a solid list of games does give it a boost as well. I think wihout that America would obviously support Xbox even more, but PS3 hangs on here in USA becasue of those games. So both factors of course but I think the brand name in foreign countries like jushnshbahar is the largest factor, but thats just my opinion.

Also OP asked about the online thing. And like other people said. Games are awesome single player, I dont think online drives the industry yet. Solid, fun games where you can go lose yourself do and it seems that PS3 with games like Uncharted and a few other games exclusive to them have that.

PS3 had NO GAMES... wait IT HAD A LOT OF GAMES.

That's the point.
