So where are guys like John lucas(Wii will sell 200 million) avinash_tyagi (Wii will outsell the entire playstation family) and Rolstoppable (85% marketshare)?
Come to dinner, the crow is served.

It seems like it would still be possible to limp there. Afterall, look at the PS2 itself, which kept selling even after superior versions of it were on the market. |
And also after the analysts on this site kept claiming it was entering it's death throes. Here we are in 2011 and the PS2 is still chugging along.
After reading through the thread though, Seece offered some pretty enlightening numbers on the issue. I don't think the Wii will manage to reach 140 million, let alone what the PS2 will finally end on.

but seriously I never thought it would. |
indeed, bought 2 PS2, but only one Wii
(and only 1 360, but I sent 2 to repairs, so these numbers are somewhat inflated too).
OoOoOoOoOoOoOoOoOoOoOoOoOoOoOoOoOoOoOoOoOoOoOoO
It should be able to pass PS1 after the holiday season this year, but I doubt it'll pass PS2

I recall putting a range of 70 - 85 % for the Wii, not that it matters much though. While that seems outrageous today, it wasn't that unreasonable back then. The common assumption was that the Wii would get better third party support over time. After all, it was breaking one sales record after another while the competition was struggling despite buying marketshare. Today, the reality is that the Wii experienced its worst case scenario. Next to none noteworthy third party support and Nintendo selfdestructing the console by providing the wrong or no games at all at times. Things would look very different today, if the Wii had gotten equal or better third party support than the HD twins, but alas, this didn't happen. If the third party support pendulum can sink the Wii to hell with its current extreme, it could have risen the Wii to heaven, if the opposite occured. Good third party support was the fundament of all those lofty lifetime predictions for the Wii. With it being removed from the equation the tower built on it collapsed spectacularly. PS: The crow for Wii not going to outsell the PS2 was served a year ago already. |
Correction:
That was the common assumption for nintendo fans.
I originally thought the Wii would pass the PS2, and I honourably admit I was wrong.
Although, to be fair, the PS2 probably wouldn't have sold half as well as it did if the industry treated it like the retarded stepchild of the family.

It would need to be up 20% YoY to pass the PS1 by the end of the holiday season. Keep in mind it was down 61% in the first quarter of the year. If that held true for the rest of the year, it would be 11.13 million away from the PS1 by the end of 2011. I don't think it will be that dire, but it probably won't reach the PS1 till the end of 2012.

I wouldn't expect it too either... however i'd really need to see the graphs in full before I could make a full comparison and in general compare trends across every generation. Things with higher peaks would be expected to fall faster even with more demand.
In general i'd say "Probably no, but can't rule it out without a deep analysis."
I miss those charts. Have nowhere to get my statistics fix now. My years of statistics knowledge are probably getting rusty.

Its got no chance, the consoles been out 5 years and its sold 57% of the PS2s sales of 150 million. The next one is out in 2012.
