Forums - Nintendo - Review: 3DS

I've just tested the 3DS at my local gamestation, and it's very impressive. Especially the interface, and this new joystick/slide button, which is very nice to use. It will replace the cross in a not so long time, and it's seems perfect for fighting games.

The 3D effect is amazing. I tried only Pilotwings for a few minutes, and changed the 3D button, it seems the engine seems to struggle slightly when the 3D button is at the maximum. Moving your head 10° from the front of the console and you'll see two images, but all in all, it's a nice addition.

Somehow, I know that graphics makes you 'wow' for 5 mn, and then, you'll forget them and concentrate on the game rather than trying to check aliasing or textures....

For me, the 3DS is not interesting, since it seems not a high evolution from the DS itself. I'll wait better games are released before to get one.

PS : The shopkeeper told me that the rush on DS was yesterday, there was only 9 left this evening...

People saying about the depth perception, you'd be right. Current 3D systems means your eyes are constantly focused on the screen and it's only an illusion of depth, your eyes can't actually focus on where the depth is meant to be. Still, it's never given me too bad a headache in cinemas so I can't see why the 3DS would. I'm still saying bring on the holograms though =P should be a holographic system in the next couple of gens.

It's the later. When the 3DS gets a price drop I'll film the 3D and compare it to one of my screens, all filmed in 3D ofcourse.

Did you play with the slider on full?

I doubt you'll be able to show anyone your comparisons. Since, y'know, most people'll be seeing that on the 3DS, xD.

And yes, I did.

If the web browser for the 3DS supports youtube 3D, you have a great point! Everyone else though could just cross their eyes or use dorky red and cyan glasses lol.

The 3DS is so much closer to your face than a cinema screen. For most people that type of depth would even hurt the eyes and give headaches. Holographic screens will take a few decades to reach handheld products. Screen resolutions would need to be upwards of 100 trillion pixels plus the fringe pattern would need to be calculated in real time. Other types of screens don't have the issue of focus and are way closer to the market.

I love your review, it makes the thing sound really like my next handheld experience, even with the huge amounts of doubt I've held for it up until now, mainly because what they've promised works well and is actually more of a good gameplay element rather than a lame gimmick. And Faceraiders sounds hilarious.

I will probably end up waiting 'till the redesign, because there MUST be one, but if this keeps up, I'm getting 3DS prior to NGP anyway.

That'd actually be kinda cool, :D.

Just out of curiosity, are your autostereoscopic screens as cheap or durable as the ones Nintendo's using? I figure there must be some reason nintendo uses them if clearly superior technology is available elsewhere.

I get them from my job. If Nintendo knew about this tech back when they decided to use a parallax barrier they would have needed to pay for R&D. The good thing about this tech is it would have used the same amount of energy in 2D and 3D modes. The bad thing is it would take stronger hardware to render the images. About 19 million pixels would need to be rendered instead of 192,000. That makes this tech perfect for movies but interactive games would have been a challenge. I have no idea how much the 3DS 3D screen costs but this tech wouldn't cost too much more.

I want to resist and not buy 3DS. At least until holiday (if I can find anyone). Sounds very awsome!

What type of screen apart from holographic doesn't have the issue of focus?

Holografika has a few good videos showing their 3D.
