Forums - Nintendo - Anyone else think the 3DS price will drop quickly?

That honestly depends. If the Nintendo 3DS shares a similar launch scene to the Wii, we can expect no form of price drop until a likely revision or until we beg so hard for a price cut that Nintendo eventually gives in and drops it $50 just like they did with the Wii in fall, 2009.

This isn't about what any of you think of the price. This about the mainstream. They don't follow the gaming news. They don't know, nor likely care, about all the features of the system. The will see a price jump and wonder if it's worth it. Just because most of you do doesn't mean the mainstream will.

Do you know that the mainstream wanted to pay 300 for a wii in the first year, because that was some of the prices that were being thrown around online. If anything this might suffer the same faith, I mean Japanese is already sold out and it just went on pre-order.

Hot items sell well, and most people think 3DS will be hot.

In Pal region, yes.

In the US or Japan, no.

“When we make some new announcement and if there is no positive initial reaction from the market, I try to think of it as a good sign because that can be interpreted as people reacting to something groundbreaking. ...if the employees were always minding themselves to do whatever the market is requiring at any moment, and if they were always focusing on something we can sell right now for the short term, it would be very limiting. We are trying to think outside the box.” - Satoru Iwata - This is why corporate multinationals will never truly understand, or risk doing, what Nintendo does.

I could see them dropping the price to 200$ when the PSP2 launches (they did the same with the DS). Either that or they'll reduce the price to 230$ / 199$ when the 3DS lite hits. I doubt they are planning to reduce prices drastically, though. They'll try to keep the price at 200$ or above. They are not trying to use a skimming price strategy with their handhelds. Rather keeping prices high by releasing new models.

Well i think we'll see what the mainstream thinks of it after 6 months of in store demonstrations.

Well that was also caused by supply constrait, and the "hot new item" mentality. Nintendo is making sure that at least the former is not a problem here.

But it does mean this really is a wait and see.
