Forums - Sales - Wii owns the Platforme genre

According to sales data of VG chartz, the Wii owns the Platform genre by a huge margin:

I will compare the sales of  games on the three home consoles for that genre, the highest selling game, the number of millions sellers and half millions sellers.

Wii:

Total of platformers sold: 64,59 millions

Best selling platformer: 21,43 millions (NSMBWii)

Numbers of millions sellers: 11 including  3 third party games

Numbers of 500 000 sellers: 20 including 11 third party games

PS3:

Total of platformers sold: 11,72 millions

Best selling platformer: 4,16 millions (LBP)

Numbers of millions sellers: 3

Numbers of 500 000 sellers: 6

Xbox360:

Total of platformers sold:  8,92 millions

Best selling platformer:  3,10 millions (Kung Fu panda, bundled with the Xbox arcade)

Numbers of millions sellers: 2

Numbers of 500 000 sellers:  7

The results are very clear.

Platformers only sell on Wii now on home console and it's a dead genre on HD consoles. That explains why the choice of Epic Mickey being on Wii was the perfect choice.

Yeah and did you know cheese is made out of milk? Thanks Mr. Obvious ;)

Btw:  Platforming dead? did you hear about LittleBigPlanet? Ratchet & Clank? It may be not as popular as 10 years before, but it's still far from dead.

Game of the year 2017 so far:

5. Resident Evil VII
4. Mario Kart 8 Deluxe
3. Uncharted: The Lost Legacy
2. Horizon Zero Dawn
1. Super Mario Odyssey

Platformers are one of my favorite genres. Yay platformers!

65% of those Wii sales are ONLY 5 Mario games.

well they make the best games, hands down, so its really not a surprise

Everyday I'm hustlin'.

Wii and DS owner.

That means that the Wii has a 75% marketshare on this market.

Mario is not getting Guiness records. HA-HA.

thats because wiis best chance of competition is through platformers, they will get killed in the other genres.

on ps3/xbox platforming is mostly used as an element within the action genre, remove PSN/XBLA games and not many games are dedicated to platforming. its regarded as a feature of a game rather than the games genre itself. Although i do agree this means that platforming is not likely to be at its best. but thats where LBP comes in and lets you replicate what any other platformer can do, make it better and add co-op/PvP to it.
