Forums - Sales - Wii owns the Platforme genre

Most of the HD plat-forming base are on their online networks. Limbo, Joe Danger, S'plosionman, P.B. Winterbottom, Blade Kitten, Trine, Braid, Raskulls, Shadow Complex, Super Meat Boy (probably the best of it's genre), Quest for Booty and heaps more are available to download between the two platforms. They may not get the same sales compared to the  mega games like the five or so Mario games that makes up the Wii's number, but the plat-forming genre is alive and well online and the releases have been pretty consistent and frequent.

Also, as someone else mentioned earlier, comparing the best selling genre from one platform to another can only end badly when people start coming in with FPS console comparisons, RPG console comparisons, Hack 'n' Slash console comparisons and so on.

Bet with Conegamer and AussieGecko that the PS3 will have more exclusives in 2011 than the Wii or 360... or something.

This is hardly surprising. Platformers have always been Nintendo's franchise. To date, only one Nintendo platform had less than 10% of its sales from platformers (the Gamecube), and not a single non-Nintendo machine has had even 7%, although the PsP got very close.

You can call platforming dead on the Ps3, but the Ps3 is selling equally many platformers as all non-Nintendo machines ever have.

Note that the older machines might have slightly lacking data, so they're probably a tiny bit higher than represented here. The percentages are the percentage of total software sales that are platformers. The total software sales were found here: http://gamrfeed.vgchartz.com/story/81136/big-three-shipment-update-forecasts-through-june-2010/ , except for the current generation machines which are just sold to date.

Gameboy Gameboy Colour: 66.4 million (13%)
Gameboy Advance: 51.5 million (13.5%)
Nintendo DS: 67.9 million (10.5%)
Playstation Portable: 14 million (7%)

Nintendo Entertainment System: 90.1 million (18%)

Super Nintendo Entertainment System: 65.7 million (16.5%)
Sega Genesis: 14.04 million (Roughly 3.5% )

Playstation 1: 47 million (5%)
Nintendo 64: 34.2 million (15%)
Saturn: 0.83 million (No idea)

Playstation 2: 44.15 million (3%)
Gamecube: 15.7 million (8%)
Xbox: 6 million (3%)

Wii: 64.6 million (10.5%)
Ps3: 11.72 million (3.33%)
X360: 9 million (2%)

According to sales data of VG chartz, the Wii owns the Platform genre by a huge margin:

I will compare the sales of  games on the three home consoles for that genre, the highest selling game, the number of millions sellers and half millions sellers.

Wii:

Total of platformers sold: 64,59 millions

Best selling platformer: 21,43 millions (NSMBWii)

Numbers of millions sellers: 11 including  3 third party games

Numbers of 500 000 sellers: 20 including 11 third party games

PS3:

Total of platformers sold: 11,72 millions

Best selling platformer: 4,16 millions (LBP)

Numbers of millions sellers: 3

Numbers of 500 000 sellers: 6

Xbox360:

Total of platformers sold:  8,92 millions

Best selling platformer:  3,10 millions (Kung Fu panda, bundled with the Xbox arcade)

Numbers of millions sellers: 2

Numbers of 500 000 sellers:  7

The results are very clear.

Platformers only sell on Wii now on home console and it's a dead genre on HD consoles. That explains why the choice of Epic Mickey being on Wii was the perfect choice.

How do platformers only sell well on wii when LBP has 4 million sales?

How is the genre dead with the imminent release of LBP2?

Also, HD consoles have some very good games that incorporate elements of platforming with action (e.g, Assassin's Creed, Uncharted, etc.).

I love platformers so yay! :D

65% of those Wii sales are ONLY 5 Mario games.

1) Cut out those 5 mario games at Wii still pwns, with higher sales of the platforming genre than the PS360 put together

2) The 5 best selling360 platformers comprise 71% of the total. Cant be bothered working out for PS3 but Im sure it would be greater than 65%

Hopefully this doesn't continue...

The 360 is mainly a Shooter system and I am not a big Shooter fan so I didn't get a 360.(Kinect is helping variety though)

I didn't buy D.K.C.R because I am tired of plat-formers at the moment...I might picked it up eventually but as of now no thanks LOL.

Good. Platformers should stay on Wii.

People are still holding to this stereotype? Yikes.

Yes, I have personally have always seen the 360 as a Shooter system...there isn't a problem with that its just not for me.(By the way I am talking exclusives wise)

It may not be for you, and that's fine,  but it's patently false to call it a 'Shooter System' by any reasonable standard. Many of its games, including exclusives, come from a plethora of genres. Just so we're clear, are you refering to first-person shooters?

Secondly, why would you limit your view of an entire system to its exclusives?
