Because controls, physics and mechanics matter a lot to fans of platformers and LBP is rather poor in these aspects with its floaty jumps.

The game isnt that advertised, and the game is harder than mario.
Also Japan is really into characters, Mario and Donkey Kong have a HUGE image in Japan, they are both common names to everybody. Little big planet and sackboy, nobody knows who he is.
| richardhutnik said: The original LittleBigPlanet was a new IP, whose main appeal is creating levels and content. It is by a company, and on the Playstation brand, which isn't know for platformers the way Nintendo's systems are. Will need to see how LBP2 does. |
So you are expecting LBP 2 to do dramatically better.? like breaking 400k barrier in sales in Japan only?
Because the point of LBP is to create platforming stages, and not much playing through them.

Donkey Kong is a brand from japan, isnt it? (invented by ninty n stuff..) and all those Mothers and fathers buying it for the childs simply dont know which studio did dev it.
And else.. youre listing 3 franchises. out of thousands. strange, ey :> ?
many japanese people simply do care mostly more about their own stuff (thats what many are saying themselfes).. its not because theyre strong racists, its because they are just used to care mostly 'bout things that come from their own country...

But isn't the best selling Donkey Kong games made by Rare?
Sure, Japan support their products, just like how any country would support their products. But I'm still not convinced that the Japanese people didn't buy LittleBigPlanet because it's not made in Japan...
Besides, isn't 170k considered good in Japan?
I think the main issue here is that you're looking at LBP all wrong. It may seem like a conventional platformer simliar to others in the genre when in truth it's more of a play.create.share software in a platforming shell.
The direction the series seems to be heading with LBP2 highlights that very clearly in fact, focusing less on the platforming gameplay side and more on the level creation side, with them adding more diverse TOOLS for level creation rather than more diverse level ideas and designs in the sequel (look at what SMG did with its sequel for comparison)
So the real issue here is whether Japanese people like the play.create.share formula type of games or not - Answer: probably not
note: LBP got a 38/40 from famitsu

You may have noticed that Sonic also never took off in Japan and it suffers from the same problem. The reason why Western platformers have had historically a hard time in Japan is that Western developers in general aren't all that good in making platformers. Donkey Kong Country succeeded, because it does things right. Crash Bandicoot, a non-Japanese game series, also did things right, at least with the first three games developed by Naughty Dog. CB is actually the closest thing we have ever had in transfering a 2D platformer into the third dimension. |
On the other hand, while the western platformers only appeal here, the Japanese platformers are a sucess worlwide (of course it depends on the quality of the game as well).

Above: still the best game of the year.
