Forums - Gaming - Buying used/Renting games = Piracy

I suppose that is true...

You aint seen me, right!

So your'e saying if you download a game on a torrent that you would never have bought anyway, burn it to a disk and just keep it for yourself to play, no one loses out AND you had to buy the DVD RW meaning profit for the company that made that disks!

A win win situation all around!

:0P

I hate the industry so much that i buy used copied games

Bet reminder: I bet with Tboned51 that Splatoon won't reach the 1 million shipped mark by the end of 2015. I win if he loses and I lose if I lost.

I didn't know the rental store pirated their games. In fact, don't they have to pay a lot of money to be able to rent out titles?

Frankly, I don't believe it's as black and white as you're trying to claim it is. On the flip side, what about the prices of games themselves? I totally love how a new copy Call of Duty 4, a three year old game, still costs $30. Sure, this is Activision setting that price, but I'd rather be seeing lower prices for games. I already can't buy every game I want at full price, what happens if other popular games were priced like the Call of Duty series? I don't see the industry working like that.

I see your point.

At least buying used/renting you're supporting a local store that employs people and helps the economy. Pirating doesn't help anyone except yourself.

I try to buy new as often as possible but sometimes they're out of new copies and used is the only option, so I'll buy used if I have to. I don't really ever rent anymore.

So is borrowing games from friends considered stealing also?

If so, I'll be in jail for the rest of my life. :(

I disagree in a way. I myself only buy used games that long been out of print. I dont buy used when the specific game is still being produced or have just have been released; I buy fresh copies. One good example was 6 months ago when I was trying to get a hold Maximo vs Army of Zin; why should capcom still get my money when they themselves ceased production of that game. It had its run already.

Basicly, buying out of print games in my humble opinion is not pirating.

DLC still gives the publisher money.

Someone can buy a EA game and purchase the online license. They could also buy Mass Effect two real cheap but end up paying for $15 for the cerebus network. Many other games also have DLC.

Either way I always try to buy my games new unless they become rare/Out of Print which is the developers fault for not circulating enough platnium hits copies/re-releasing it via XBox 360 digital copies.

It's just that simple.

Well not really. Because if I sell my 1 game then thats only one game being sold to 1 person. If I put up a torrent and its essentially duplicated millions of times thats multiplying that copy many times. The end result of the action is different.

There are further differences. We know that that one game was initially purchased. Thats not neccesarily so with pirated games, some do get leaked. However this is a minor quibble.

The main difference I would say is that selling used games subsidises a huge number of retailer jobs whereas putting a torrent on a website will mostly not help employment. Essentially these sales do help the brick and mortar stores that do actually sell the new products aswell. So that money is injected back into the economy.

The same goes for rental stores, who employ lots of people and also buy the games from the publisher initially.

So whilst both actions aren't going to be seen as good by the developer theres no contest when it comes to the comparison between the two. Buying used and renting games are far better for the economy then pirating and more ethical.
