Forums - Sales - Nintendo DS Becoming Best Selling Console of All Time in a Couple of Days

It is good to see the DS is / will be on top. It will happen or it has happened already either way is just a question of when you ask the question.

Anyway im proud to see the DS as the champion because Nintendo used no dirty tactics, they didn't try to drive competitors out of the market and they didn't make silly boasts and act as if they were they king of everything. In this respect the good guys have won and we all like to see the good guys win.

Everyone acts arrogantly when too much success befalls them.  Nintendo has been cocky at points this gen.  Let them win a bit more, it'll be just like the past again lol.  Let's not turn a money making endeavor (corporation) into saints.

so then if the DS is a console. Is the ipod touch a console?

Nope, as it not a deticated game machine. It is a music player that also happens to play games. DS exists for the sole purpose of playing video games.

it depends on the consumer. There are tons of people that buy ps3 or psp simply just for their media. the DS can live for the sole purpose of playing music for example. So that logic doesn't really apply here. Like said before, i think it really depends who you ask, and there is no right answer.

That's just a waste of time and money... some people bought the PS3 at launch for a cheaper Blu-ray player but there are so many other devices dedicated to media for cheaper and better for it, it's quite foolish to believe many people buy a PS3 or PSP just for media purposes especially since things like the UMD movies format failed and Blu-ray isn't anywhere near taking over DVD, and well just about every dedicated MP3 player would be cheaper than buying a PSP or PS3...

I'm pretty sure the argument basis isn't over whether the DS is a "thing that plays games", its over a possible inherent advantage that handhelds have over consoles.  They are portable, possibly enhancing their consumer base.  They're usually cheaper, as are their games.  There is a much greater tendency for a household to have multiple copies of them.  How many houses have two 360's or PS3's.  There's probably not even that many dual Wii households.

And on top of that, Ps2 is undertracked by quite a bit on the site.

I know quite a few with multiple 360s in fact I know quite a few with multiple PS2s...

Usually in both cases its because of system failures weather that be after a system died or a preemptive measure to get the newer more reliable models.

I still think the PS2 will hold the title of #1 selling home console after this generation is over. I don't think the Wii will beat it, but the Wii will certainly pass ~100 million with ease.

True, but as you say, it is an anomaly as most systems don't fail, at least not for a long time.  I think we can forgive the PS2 being replaced once or twice at this point in its life.  For most people, even core gamers, two of the same console in one house is pushing it.  And you haveto admit, multipple Ds's in a house is far from an anomaly.  Between my brother and I, my house has bought 3 Ds's, because of the multiple updates.  The DS is simply prone to this. Not a bad thing really, just a fact.

Core gamers like new models of home console as well, in fact if it isn't system failure then remodels are probably the next biggest reason for a gamer to buy the same console again.

I mean you remember all the people that came on the forums to post how they bought the PS3 slim and the 360 slim, theres a number of people that did that with PS2 slim as well or the PSP slim.

True, but I kind of feel that a lot of us aren't the average buyer of gaming goods.  My house has 3 Ds's, a 360, two Ps3's, a Wii and 4 PSP's.  Not normal rofl.   I'm not disagreeing that some of us definitely rebuy consoles, I'm just saying the effect is much greater with handhelds.  For me, it's 7 handhelds over two units to 4 home consoles, over 3 (6 if you count the two PS2's I've had).

And "casual" folks would usually not buy repeated consoles save to replace a console, and they may even go used. :X

My friends household has had 6 360s, 3 PS3s, 3 DSs, a Wii, and a PSP.  Most of those rebuys for PS3 and 360 are for system failures or so he and his dad own their own console, DS because there was that limited edition Zelda model and the DSi XL.  He also had multiple PS2s at least 2 of the phats died on him which he has a slim now but I don't know how many total.

Personally I've owned 1 of each since unlike him I wait for hardware revisions instead of launch save Wii/DS so I haven't needed to rebuy a console, I've owned 3 DS consoles because one burned up in a house fire, bought a replacement, then just upgraded to lite.  I've owned 2 PSPs because I wanted one of the older models.  So I guess I'm more typical lol

Lol, I'm not hating on the 360, but if ANYTHING failed on me that many times, it would be so done.  Imagine if a car did that to you...  That's too extreme for me haha, and also insane dedication on his part.  So you own more handhelds if I followed correctly, yeah?  And a house fire! Damn sorry about that man. :(

Well my friend went through like 3 360s and his dad did as well so 3 each, all of those were failures, one of those PS3s was due to a failure.

And yeah I've been building my collection back up since the house fire, most of the games/even some consoles in my collection were destroyed in that fire but the database here helps me list what I need to rebuy.  I've started rebuilding with the SNES, after that I'm gonna find a Gen/Sega CD, N64 but since my PS3 plays PS1 games and my Wii GC games I'm not even bothering with rebuying those consoles.
