Forums - Sales Discussion - Nintendo DS Becoming Best Selling Console of All Time in a Couple of Days

According to VGChartz the Nintendo DS is only a couple of days away to overtakes the PS2 lifetime sales:

PS2 = 138,255,449

DS = 137,418,885

And the best thing is it only took 6 years to accomplish that feat. It seems the new king of hardware set the bar very high for a new record. Can the 3DS or any other upcoming consoles be able to do better?  We'll see but now it's time to celebrate!

Sony really screwed up.

 They should really let retailers sell those 9 Million PS2's sitting on store shelves.

Yes in 6 years! And the Wii is on track to beat it as well, as long as it sticks around for 10 years like the ps2 then it's possible. People say it won't happen but look its beating the competition thus far.

Yeah but it won't have changed anything in the end since the Nintendo DS is still on top of the charts and will easily sell more than 9 million units before it stops selling.

vgchartz undertracked ps2.  everyone knows ps2 is at 147 million.  DS still might pass it, but its going to be a little longer.

I would think this was an amzing accomplishment but the fact the DS is a hand-held and the ps2 was a home console, my amazinment is slightly reduced :P

Easily. I think 170 Million is a possibility for it if Nintendo keep it on the market and do what Sony did with the PS2, release it in a bunch of emerging markets.

I just think it's better to wait until it's passed it in shipment data, as that's when the entire industry will acknowlege that's it's done it. Even Nintendo!

PS2's actually at 150 million, as people already mentioned, but it makes no difference. VGC will probably make a long term adjustment to its sales when we have a final shipment total from Sony.

For now, though, let us celebrate the rise of the DS! 200 million ain't out of reach, :D.

People with this stupid argument again....

Many people bought 2, 3,4, even 5 PS2s, and before DS, no handheld sold close to those numbers, actually, apart from Nintendo brands (and PSP) handhelds have been pretty much dead.

@Carl, knowing the DS, the "9 million gap" will be reduced to 2 million by end of 2010
