Forums - Sales - Final Fantasy, Dragon Quest, Tomb Raider all hugely undertracked

Just saw this in another thread, thought the discrepancy was so big that it deserved its own thread...

"The Square Enix Group boasts a valuable portfolio of intellectual property including: FINAL FANTASY, which has sold over 97 million units worldwide; DRAGON QUEST®, which has sold over 54 million units worldwide; TOMB RAIDER®, which has sold over 35 million units worldwide; and other well-established products and services."

http://release.square-enix.com/na/2010/06/30_01.html

VGChartz figures for said games are at the following -

Final Fantasy - 84.21 Million

Dragon Quest - 32.06 Million

Tomb Raider - 26.93 Million

Final Fantasy is undertracked by about 10 Million units.
Dragon Quest is undertracked by about 20 (!) Million units.
Tomb Raider is undertracked by about 8 Million units.

Thoughts?

Edit: Ignore the Dragon Quest thing. Was a dickstain and forgot to do Dragon Warrior sales.

Exactly, I think the source has said it many times. That old database is incomplete.

(Given that Dragon Quest shouldn't be that undertracked....since most of the sales come out of Japan....and we should have those sales up...)

Were they including spin-offs in that list, maybe, or does vgchartz do that, too?

Hmm

Back in the day (NES), Dragon Quest / Dragon Warrior was pretty big in the USA, probably 500,000 - 1,000,000 per iteration and the GB games were big too. They were sort of cult classics. Same was true to a lesser extent on SNES. I don't think the DQs from GBA / PS1 onward are undertracked. But you probably have 10m DQ games right there, and I'd guess Square-Enix is including smaller spinoffs that the database may not have at all.

For Final Fantasy, there are PC versions which aren't tracked, and you have the same issue for NES / SNES in the West (although FF didnt really become big in the west until SNES). Tomb Raider always did well on PC too, so I'd figure alot of the sales are there.

Actually Carl, you fail....you didn't add Dragon Quest and Dragon Warrior together.....

Add: @Source I think the main issue is how Carl added Dragon Quest titles...

Actually I think we did a good job with Dragon Quest in terms of past sales, as if you add the total of Dragon Warrior and Dragon Quest it is about 50 million.
