PS3 started slower but was at a much higher price than the Wii. Almost 4 years after the launches the Wii is on 75 million and the PS3 just over 40 million sales.

Wii sales started fast and well peaked in second year 2008 with 25 million sales. The sales of the Wii are expected to trend downwards over time. 2009 (20 million sales) was a 20% decline on 2008 sales. 2010 sales should be another 15% to 20% decline on 2009 sales: 16 to 17 million Wii console sales for 2010. 

PS3 may even claw back the  sales gap on the Wii as its big games and price cuts help  boost PS3 sales. PS3 in the next 5 or 6  years may well outsell the Wii by 30 to 40 million console units. Time will reveal all. 

PS3 can possibly make the biggest come back in console wars history. 2016 may well see the PS3 over take the Wii in total console sales. The chances are very slim but the PS3 has a chance of re-writing history. 

I think this is "possible" but unlikely (like a 10% chance at best).  Second place is guaranteed for PS3, but first?  Idk.



Prediction for console Lifetime sales:

Wii:100-120 million, PS3:80-110 million, 360:70-100 million

3DS: 65m, PSV: 22m, Wii U: 18-22m, PS4: 80-120m, X1: 35-55m

I gauruntee the PS5 comes out after only 5-6 years after the launch of the PS4.

To expand on my post, the PS1 took around 9 years to break the 100 million mark, that was 4 years after the new generation started.

The PS2 had reached 100 million at just about 5 years, and after 4 years was at 81 million.

That means the PS3 if it wishes to follow the PS1 it is already ~30 million behind and if it wishes to catch up to the PS2 it is ~40 million behind.  To outsell the PS1, it would have to sell for 8 years or longer after the new generation which just isn't going to happen.

The PS3 is tracking well below the past PS consoles and it looks very doutbful that anything could bring its sales up to those levels.

The PS3 has outsold the Wii for most of the second half of this year. PS Move is moving kits of PS3 console systems. PS3 is closing the gap on the Wii and the 360.

it's smth like 35m difference, it cannot outsell Wii by 7 million for the next 5 years!?

also, Ps3 needs mega hits like Mario Kart Wii and Wii Fit to reach the Wii

True and the PS3 isn't going to catch the Wii. The Wii is still outselling the PS3 every holiday. Even this holiday. Even the XBox 360 is outselling the PS3 this holiday so far. If you can't win holidays, you won't catch the leaders ever. XBox 360 is about to break the 50 million mark.
