You're telling me. All three did in the beginning. Microsoft no longer does really on console prices (at least not ridiculously) and Nintendo has started to play ball a bit. But Sony is still a bitch at the moment. For example, a Dual Shock three costs $US90 here.

So the AUD is now worth more than green backs. . .

If retailers selling them at 97 AUD It might be because retailers are gouging you.

and i think the 360 is going to have a small chance of catching the ps3 in Japan. I mean maybe they will start selling them for 50 cents in candy dispensers. Really the ps3 has no chance to catch up in the UK or USA, unless they decide to not go to the next gen for another 15 years. The PS3 is having difficulty catching up with its slim upgrade and pricecut in those 2 regions. The 360 will have another price cut this fall, I am not assuming they will have a slim model, but if it does that will help it even more. There really is no iffy on who will win where. The 360 will win in Americas, and English speaking nations, The PS3 will win mostly everywhere else. Its just who wins by how much in those regions that will determine which console will sell better.

I cannot explain how they offer such a cheap price.
But all brick and mortar retailers currently offer only exhorbinant prices for Sony PS3 related goods, and PS3's themselves.

Are we fook!
Sometimes I think there isn't a patriotic bone left in this country, the UK is an odd place, we don't generally support nationalism and yet have an abundance in patriotism, still people fail to realise that they are patriotic and think that it is a bad thing to love their country, to show patriotism is frowned upon and you can even get called racist for things like flying the St George Cross.
But natioanlism and patriotism sometimes go hand in hand, especially as far as consumerism is concerned, now I think that people are more likely to be biased towards Sony in the UK because they do a lot of business with us, they have the London, Liverpool and Newcastle studios over here as well as Media Molecule etc.
MS only has Lionhead as a UK developer, but the price of the 360 in a recession and the fact that is is the product of an English speaking nation is what drives people towards the 360, as much as people may admire the PS3, being able to talk to Americans (who are in abundance on the 360) is a preferable choice to talking to Europeans (who generally tend towards the PS3) with the whole language barrier, add in the cheap factor and you are onto a winner!
360 has a niche, but when recession ends, I think there will be a different story to tell, PlayStation is doing well to say they are even selling PS3's over here!
EDITED
wow so many people don't get the point of this thread
Yeah I think your right seece.....slim had the least effect in UK so it does kinds show the market is more prone to 360 than other ones from that point of view.

Sometimes i think there isn't a patriotic bone left in this country, look at my Avatar, I am partiotic and I support the PS3, I am living proof that you are wrong here, the reason people buy 360's over here is because of the vast advertisement campaign and the lower price, we have been hit hard by recession and people don't really care about quality atm. I got my PS3 before recession hit, If I wasn't a savage fanboy I am sure I wouyld have a 360 by now! EDIT- in a bit of a hurry, will make the post more coherent later on today! |
Squilliam's post was a joke - in reference (I believe) to the situation in Japan.

To original thread:
Wii UK share: 46.6%
360 UK share: 32.6%
PS3 UK share: 20.7%
Wii Americas share: 47.5%
360 Americas share: 32.9%
PS3 Americas share: 19.6%
What we can see from this is that, actually, the UK is the strongest market for the PS3 (out of these two - thus making the 360 weaker). BUT these numbers are scewed.
If we're trying to use this figures to compare markets, we have to remember that the Americas figures contain more than one market: they also include Canada, and probably Mexico. I'm guessing that the figures might also include data from other North American and South American countries. Any inclusion from markets south of the USA will have a 360 bias due to ease of piracy, and the wealth of the nations included.
Seeing as the markets are so close with this bias included, it's only fair to assume that the UK will come out as the relatively stronger market if we remove this bias, and only deal with the USA's data versus the UK.
However, this comparison is only really between the USA and UK, and it's somewhat pointless. If we're trying to find the place with the most 360 sales - it's going to be the USA. If we're looking for a place where the 360 is strongest it's going to be, as MontanaHatchet pointed out earlier, a poorer country where piracy makes a lot of difference. What we're trying to do here is try to find a place where the UK excels... but, as always, we're middle-of-the-road.
One final tit-bit:
^ UK Google trends data. Blue = 360, red = 360. This shows that the PS3 and 360 have relatively equal searches, but that the media focuses more on the 360 - thus giving the illusion to greater 360 dominance in the UK.

Maybe even in Australia and probably in Canada, even though we don't have much data from canada at all, but I doubt they are 100% different to the US data. So the largest english speaking countries do prefer the Xbox 360 over the PS3. This might be a big plus for the next generartion. First step: Get into the market (Xbox) Second step: establish on the market (Xbox 360) Third step: Dominate the market (Xbox³) ![]() I think having a huge fanbase in some of the biggest markets in this industry can't be wrong. |
How will the 360 easily secure 2nd place in the UK? GT5 has not even been released yet ^^ The last Top Gear I saw (it was a rerun yes) they even mentioned that Polyphony Digital (or as he said: "the guys behind the fabolous Gran Turismo games") had made the graphics for the car's speedometer and whatnot. GT5 will help the PS3 in the UK a lot, but the gap is pretty big though, 1.7 million. However, I don't believe the PS3 is out of the race just yet. It looks like it will be a tough battle, almost impossible. Let GT5 show us the truth =P
And Australia? Even with the ridicolous prices our forum's members from Down Under report, the PS3 is still doing fairly well compared to the 360. This week it sold about 1000 more units, and the PS3 is about 144.000 units behind, which is a lot. But the PS3 is apparently really expensive in Australia, so if the PS3 has a price drop it may sell a lot better in the future.
To all the people saying about patriotism and loyalty to western products etc, that's junk.
As I said before virtually EVERY advert for a game in the UK is branded as Xbox360, even to the extent they make out that MW2 is a 360 exclusive! Theres at least one Xbox360 advert each ad break and maybe one PS3 advert a week. UK also has many pirates, theres probably a shop in every town you can flash your 360 at!
Sometimes I forget the PS3 exists and that theres multiplatform games on the system, if they could microsoft would have 360 branded ads for Uncharted 2 and Little Big Planet in the UK!
They are winning, and British public interest seems to edge towards the 360 (which I thought was otherwise), and the reason above seems to be why. If anything to do with patriotism we should all have PS3s since LBP is voiced by the legendary Stephen Fry and was made in the UK! Plus most 360 exclusives are so Americanised it's untrue (Halo/Gears are very "American" franchises).
