Forums - Nintendo - Why Red Steel 2 bombed

As I was saying on another thread, somewhere around 60% to 65% of million selling Wii games have a significant 4 player local multiplayer mode; and around half of the rest have a significant 2 player local multiplayer mode. Local multiplayer is one of the most important features to the Wii and is probably of similar importance to having good-graphics and online multiplayer combined on the HD consoles. Unless the game has a genre defining single player experience, I think it would be foolish to release any Wii game without local multiplayer.

Bring this game to PS MOVE and let's show Nintendo how core games should sell.

Bioshock would like to have a word with you.

Well, no. Late port would be blamed if it doesn't sell.

Quickly needs ports for PS3, Xbox and Wii2 to recoup the looses.

Can't wait when Ubisoft stops making these FPSwords bombs and goes back to JustDanced with WM+, that's where the innovation should go too (and also where the money is).

Here lets look at why Red Steel 2 really failed.

The first game Red Steel sold almost entirely because it was a launch title for the Wii. Gamers had very little software selection and therefor purchased Red Steel. Red Steel was not only a launch title it was the first and only shooter for the Wii giving it a major leg up over the other 4 launch titles. Since Red Steel 2 is not a launch title infact it wasn't even a motion plus launch title it got delayed and now motion+ is something of the past.

Second is obvious, with 1.20 million people having owned the first game and noticed how poor the game was in the quality department why would anyone buy the sequel. This leads to a ton of consumers not willing to shell out the coin for Red Steel 2 and in turn that leads to way lower sales. The game also changed the art style which may have turned off a few of the consumers who actually liked Red Steel.

Three and obviously has to be advertising, I haven't seen many Red Steel 2 ads infact I saw more Conduit ads. The hype train here on VGChartz wasn't as big either. With less hype and less advertising what do you expect. Of course Nintendo did push it at E3 but thats not enough.

Lastly to say The Conduit was a failure is sort of wrong. I mean seriously breaking the 300,000 mark is not a failure. The title was low budget and the sales were more then enough to turn a profit. Its funny that if a title doesn't reach a million people automatically call it a failure when a million is a massive success.

Long story short I think the next Red Steel will be on the Move or a future gaming platform. These sales are way to low for UbiSoft's standards!

It wouldn't sell on PSMOVE.

Trust me, hardcore gamers don't want to look like they're running around their living room with a toy sword.  It just isn't cool.

Ubisoft did not get any celebrities at all to be involved in their game.  They didn't try at all in this respect.  Why didn't they get a celebrity to be the voice actor for the main character?  Obviously the Hero is a knock off of the Man With No Name, but I can understand why Clint Eastwood would cost too much money and Charles Bronsan died a couple of years ago (man did I love him).  Who should they have gotten?  How about Kevin Costner?  He's been in a couple of Westerns and hasn't been doing much work lately.  Truth be told, he's not a very good actor and he'd be happy to be doing anything that isn't a movie about baseball.  Also,  Ennio Morricone obviously wouldn't be available to do the soundtrack, but they could get John Bon Jovi to do it.  He's written songs about cowboys and even though I think that his music sucks, it would have gotten the interest of middle aged women that play Wii Fit.

IDK man, Bon Jovi's songs didn't exactly help FFCC: TCB :P

Bon Jovi working on that Final Fantasy game was a poor descision on his part.  You can't market an RPG like that to the Wii Fit crowd.  There's just no appeal to them.

Cowboys, on the other hand, can easily be marketed toward women.  They are totally into cowboys.

I said core sales.  Are you saying that Mario Kart Wii isn't a core game?
