Forums - Sony Discussion - Sony has "Nintendo, Wii" In their tags for the MOVE on youtube LOL!!

Wii didn't invent motion controls.

Neither did someone who is being plagiarized invent words.

Sony move was combined with what Sony was working on with the time, plus what was working for Nintendo (accelerometers so you can detect angle... etc) to combine into the move, which looks a lot like the Wiimote since that design scheme worked for them.

The entire motion control system isn't a copy... however a large part of it is. Without Nintendo, chance are there would be no accelerometers to detect angles and there would be no sub controller, instead you would just use a PS2 controller... and as such, it would be used for much less games.

This is genius. It is to make sure that if you search the wii, you see this. Thus maybe you will buy this instead.

^ This. People really should read up more on marketing

It's a question of ethics really, some will see nothing wrong with it, some will. Some companies will attempt to distinguish themselves from the competition, whereas others will mimic or piggyback on the success of others, sometimes they mimic others from completely different market sectors.

It's like that McDonald's advert from last year here in the UK with a poem describing the different people who go into the restaurants, and then Cathedral City put out an ad with an identical concept. It was pretty obvious, but it's up to the individual to decide whether they thought that was a cheap way of doing things...

Sony did not innovate anything......their controller at launch didnt even have any analog sticks but once the N64 analog was getting praise , sony made the dual-stick model controller and when nintendos rumble pak took off , sony made the dual shock......all sony has done is copy Nintendo by literally doubling it.

It is a case of follow the leader.

Sony have historically improved upon those ideas though, so it's not all bad.

Analogue -> Dual Analogue

Rumble Pak -> Built in Rumble

Anyway...
Why do we never see any complaints about say, the DVD? Wasn't the PlayStation 2 the first console to use DVD tech? Yet now it is used by the Xbox... Or wasn't the original PlayStation the console with CD-based tech to first "use it successfully", with over 100Million units sold? We never hear anything about those though do we?

Or even the PlayStation Memory Card... Surely that was the first to be uber popular, with 100M+ sales of the console... Why don't we ever hear anything about that? Both Wii and 360 STILL use Memory Cards.

Being the first to be popular isnt the same as being innovative.....which should be obvious.

And the ps2 using dvd's is just progression NOT innovation.....there were other gaming machines using discs as mediums and dvd's were the next discs to be used. You dont hear about any of these in an innovations discussion because they have no place in them.

Yes Sony broke these once after thought products and made them gaming standards , but that is not innovating that is using past ideas for your own success.

Thats one reason I believe that the Move will fail and Natal will have a chance to succeed......the move is already copying something that is easily the biggest thing in console gaming history which is the wii-mote and that will make it look like a copycat. While Natal is copying something that faltered and improving on it vastly which is the eyetoy.....this gives Natal a chance while the Move is already sent to its deathbed at birth.

*BTW , most cd-based consoles before the PS1 used memory cards......case in point the sega-cd.

I was just waiting for you to use that

Nintendo fans have been saying Motion Controls are the future. Surely that means it's just "progression", yes? And they should be happy both Sony and MS are also jumping on the tech... Yes?

But oh no. It's TERRIBLE that they are also starting with Motion Control! How dare they!

Which is worse? The tag being added or people using it as a means to score points?

Tag being added.

Way worse and shameless

It doesn't take brains to figure out people searching for Nintendo wii will stumble along move videos, basically it will get more attention from the casuals this way which is maybe why Sony has done this, yes it is a low blow, but can you blame them??
besides i can think of worse things done lol

it's the future of handheld

The problem the innovations you listed (CD, DVDs, memory cards) is that they don't have much to do with playing the games itself. All of that stuff is supposed to be invisible to the gamer, anyway - it mainly shows up in lower costs for games.

Nintendo's innovations - the D-pad, Rumble, Analogue, Wiimote, etc. change the gaming experience. Also, none of these are logical progressions - without Nintendo, motion controls probably would not have taken off (yet). Historically, Nintendo has clearly been the main innovator here, which is why people are quick to harp on Sony for this latest move. The problem seems to be Sony fans denying Nintendo any credit, along with the other side feeling compelled to drive the point through (so they bring it up in every damn thread).

Ah, whatever. As for the topic, it's funny at first, but not such a big deal in the end. Nintendo is the market leader, after all.

These responses have some great points, and should be looked at in how to debate.

I think Sony has copied Nintendo's strategy, not the product.  They are trying to diversify their portfolio to include motion control.  I think thats a good thing.

It also keeps Nintendo on their toes, and we all know Nintendo on their toes, they come out with great surprises that keeps this industry fresh.

I game.  You game.  We game.

I'm a videogamer, not a fanboy, but have a special place for Nintendo.

Copying Nintendo controls is already embarrassing enough, but this is absolutely insane.

Get real kid. Nintendo didn't invent it.

They came up with the design and implementation, so how didn't they invent it?

Sony fans, I love you, but you're the kings of spin.

Nintendo did not invent motion controls.

Move has the same design, so? What people fail to realize in this industry is, companies use other ideas from other companies.

Sony was the first to design dual-analog controllers, Nintendo did it, so did Microsoft.

Do you see anyone getting butthurt over it?

Touché

Oranges look very much like Tangerines, but nobody claims that one copied off the other!

Seeing as how Sony have not run into any copyright issues, I think you will find that NO copying has taken place, It would be ILLEGAL to copy the Wii mote.

Sony MAY have taken inspiration from the Wii mote, but the word "copy" CANNOT apply to this situation since there is no legal way of doing so, the PS move may LOOK like a Wii mote, but it is not, I understand it has different features to a Wii mote, it has depth perception and can render things into your hands, if this is not innovation then I don't know what is!

this definitely wont sway people from getting a Wii, but it will entice existing Ps3 owners to pick this up.
