Forums - Gaming - ID Software just lost 50% of its staff

Xbox have gutted ID software and fired 95 developers which is reported to be most of their programmers and engine tech guys. There's even speculations they are moving to the dreaded Unreal engine 5 or maybe turned into a support team. Considering this is one of the renowned studio under Bethesda, how come it doesn't have its own big news article on the front page or anyone bring light to this news and its being swept under the rug?

Doom dev id Software reportedly halved following Xbox's mass layoffs

Microsoft is becoming as good as EA at killing studios.

It looks like they're going to be more of an Art support studio going forward. Possibly just creating the assets for Machine Games to make the next doom/quake title.

Bethesda Union put out this:

So even the Fallout/TES team was hit. 25% of Obsidian is gone, 50% of the ESO team and there's also another 1600 layoffs coming over the next 12 months so expect more studios to be gutted.

Thats crazy yet it's been hush hush and no one wants to put this on the spot light. I've seen more minor bungie news to create outrage and make it on the front page than this.

I loved Doom 2016 and Eternal; the Dark Ages did not catch me nearly as much, but to think the studio is now basically gone after two straight up bangers and a good game is really sad. I have mentioned this previously, these studios after the acquisition were asked to make "gamepass games" that try something different and are focused on variety, not straight up direct sales. And now they are being punished for it because their games did not sell that well.

It is good the Bethesda Union is pointing out Asha's spin on it. Even on this site with nothing but gaming enthusiasts, numerous people referred to the massive layoffs as "cutting the fat", which sounds so positive. Everybody nodded hearing "we have up to 14 layers of management" thinking, yes, that sounds ridiculous, of course they need to change that and lay off people in these positions. But that is not what has happened here.

They are have-beens

Deus Ex (2000) - a game that pushes the boundaries of what the video game medium is capable of to a degree unmatched to this very day.

We lost SyncError....

While I haven't been that interested in their output for many years, I've enjoyed listening to commentary on them. This is a shame; they really were a very important FPS studio.

More than that. A filing in Texas indicates it's 136 positions total. 96 at their main office and 40 remote workers. The only unknown is how many employees are at their office in Germany, as that location appears to be unaffected, but I can't imagine it was a large office. The majority would've been in Texas.

I'm attending Quakecon next month. I go nearly every year. It's gonna be a depressing one. Especially the opening keynote address from id's studio heads to everyone in attendance.

You called down the thunder, now reap the whirlwind

And once more, we're seeing how disastrous these major buyouts turned out. I have fond memories of people claiming it would benefit the industry. This is so sad, ID Software is more than just an old-dog studio; they're one of the last remaining bastions of properly optimized graphics engines and balls-to-the-walls gameplay design.
