Forums - Politics - Japan set to elect its first female Prime Minister

64-year-old Sanae Takaichi has been elected as the new leader of Japan's ruling conservative party, which puts her on course to be the first female Prime Minister in the country's history.

Takaichi is a staunch conservative, a protégé of the late Shinzo Abe, and was a heavy metal drummer as a student.

I came across a BBC News YouTube video about this earlier today.
When I translated a few of the Japanese comments, it seemed that many folks weren’t happy with the BBC’s reporting for two main reasons:

A) Inaccuracies - Some mentioned biased coverage, stating the BBC misunderstood or misrepresented Takaichi’s comments about “work-life balance”
B) Focus on gender - Several folks criticised how overseas media tend to emphasise gender-related angles, saying it’s irrelevant and that the focus should be on policy instead

It will be interesting to see where she will go economically. On one hand, she apparently wants to bring back Abenomics to help export industries and she doesn't rule out even more national debt. On the other hand, she said she wants to stop rising prices for everyday goods. But Abenomics would pretty much cause the exact opposite.

I will have an eye for it, since I'm planning to move to japan next year. Of course, a weak yen is good for me, as I will be earning most of my money in Euro. But I fear that ever rising prices will play into the hands of the idiots from Sanseito. I really don't want Japan to also drift into hardcore nationalism. It's what I'm trying to escape from, goddamnit! =P

How come you thought Japan was a good destination for that? One of the most closed countries when it comes to being part of their culture.

I just like Japan and have nothing but good experiences. To be honest my first choice was USA. But that country turned fascist, so I gave up on it. =P

I still think Japan is less likely to turn full fascist than many european countries are right now. I also thought about New Zealand. But then I was kinda into the challenge of Japan because of the language and the totally different culture. After about 4 months of learning 日本語, I can say that I am making some real progress. I can understand easy conversations and read mangas with furigana. I memorized about 700 Kanji according to Anki. Which motivates me even more.

But in the end, yeah it may be a dumb idea. But I'll still try. I will get there for four weeks in advance to kind of test the waters though.

If you think many European countries are turning fascist, you might have a pretty low bar for what you consider fascism... Where are you from, if I may ask?

I do not think it is a dumb idea. Japan is a fantastic country, recently visited. I just did not get the reasoning behind it.

Japan is rapidly adding more functions to slow down tourism and immigration, making it more difficult to visit. My country was not part of the test group of countries who already need additional papers to enter.  So if you are set on moving there it is probably better to try and make it happen sooner rather than later.

Germany, the ugly mother of fascism itself. =P

Japan is OK country to visit for week or two, see important places and trying to learn more about culture.
But to live there?
Hell No.
Also Germany is one of the most open minded countries right now in Europe, they are far from fascistic country.
If you count Germany as fascistic country just because of WW2 then Japan is the same since they are allies in WW2.
Also i do agree with people who have issue with all focus on gender. Like her gender will make her good PM. For all we know she could be the worst PM in history of Japan. Its all about her politics and what will be her focus.

As of right now, I totally agree. In fact, we are one of the, if not the most open minded country in the world right now. But living here, I see where things are headed. For years Nazis are gaining traction and it doesn't seem to stop. And I don't want to be unprepared. Emigrating is nothing you do just overnight. I have to take care of a lot of things. That will be a lot more difficult once Nazis will be in the government. And as a member of SPD, I myself will pretty certainly be pursued in such a scenario. Maybe it won't happen, but I don't want to just rely on that welcome option. I mean, I have seen how fast things can develop in the US.

Plus, I never liked germany all that much. People are complaining all the time and about everything. =P
