But in the end, yeah it may be a dumb idea. But I'll still try. I will get there for four weeks in advance to kind of test the waters though. 

I do not think it is a dumb idea. Japan is a fantastic country, recently visited. I just did not get the reasoning behind it. 

Japan is rapidly adding more functions to slow down tourism and immigration, making it more difficult to visit. My country was not part of the test group of countries who already need additional papers to enter.  So if you are set on moving there it is probably better to try and make it happen sooner rather than later.
