A quick recap:

October 26, 2016: The NX was revealed to be the Nintendo Switch. After the swarm infestation of NX rumors that greatly annoyed many, we finally were able to see what the console is: a hybrid console that is portable. Many, myself included, had many skeptisms on how this will preform, as it was trailing the commerical failure Wii U, and 3DS sales were slowing down. Was it powerful enough, equal or better than the PS4/XOne, will it affect the battery life? How much would it cost? Will people care with mobile phones and tablets becoming ever more present? Did Nintendo learn anything with the Wii U and will it flop?

January 13, 2017: Nintendo Switch Presentation rolls out, and there was a huge mix in reactions. BotW at launch, Mario Odyssey, Xenoblade 2, Splatoon 2!! Arms? Oh look, another party game.. $300 USD? Is the HD rumble worth the extra cost? Not to mention that stock falls shortly after the Switch reveal. There was some 3rd Party support, but those were already confirmed from the initial reveal. Honestly, the price was what really worried me the most. Without early adopters, other companies won't be interested in making or porting games to the Switch, which would lead to less games and the same downward spiral that the Wii U ended up in.

March 3, 2017: The Switch finally launches and is well received by Nintendo fans, but that's is obvious. Zelda BotW initially getting 98 on meta and sold more copies than systems available. But like with all systems, skeptisms follow. Notably, the Wii U having strong launch numbers that didn't last. Faulty systems, with the Joycon not syncing, dock scratching the screen, kickstand falling over too much, etc.

June 13, 2017: Nintendo's Spotlight at E3. Probably Nintendo's shortest presentation ever, with Kirby and Yoshi announced for 2018, and Metroid Prime 4 and Pokemon being in development for Switch but no extra info. Got a lot of Nintendo fans really excited, saying it's Nintendo's best E3, though I kept the cautiously excited attitude. Didn't help that stock shortages was still an issue since launch

Fast forward to November, after more shortages, and after launch of Mario Odyssey.. One thing is really apparent, the launch line up has been really strong, but more importantly, it was consistent. If you look back to their game announcements, not a single game has been delayed. It is obvious that BotW and Mario was releasing in 2017, but for other games especially Xenoblade 2, many were convinced that it will be delayed to Spring 2018 at the very least. I think this is what truly set Nintendo apart this year than compared to their other years (2014 comes in mind). A strong consistent line-up of games that were not delayed, and with Xenoblade 2 around the corner, any recent year can't really compete with.

So this really brings up another question: Is this just a one year anomaly, since Nintendo is on a make or break to get really strong initial sales? It will be difficult to say, and I have no idea what 2018 has to offer aside from Fire Emblem, Kirby and Yoshi from the top of my head. It may not be as strong as 2017, maybe not even close, but Nintendo's future is definitely looking much better than one year ago, this time.

Oh right, mobile was a thing too.

Part 2: The 3DS

The Switch definitely had a strong launch, but the same things can't be said with the 3DS.

The 3DS got a couple of Wii U ports, with Poochy and Yoshi launching in 2017. More VC content including Pokemon GS, and a couple of Kirby spin-offs.

Next, there was the games that were either budget titles so nobody really cared about, or was pretty niche and didn't seel well:
- Hey! Pikmin
- Ever Oasis
- Mario Sports Superstar
- Miitopia
- Fire Emblem Warriors (n3Ds exclusive)

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iPo1imdqd1s

Then there was the games that people were interested in and were overall well received.
- Fire Emblem Echoes: A trial game, where Nintendo took the risk to gauge the market after the Fire Emblem hype from Awakening and Fates (and Heroes?). Salewise, it's not bad compared with the FE franchise, but it's significantly lower than 13+14 so it's really unfortunate, as I really enjoyed this game
- Samus Returns: This game really shows Nintendo's change in mentality, trying to please the fans, despite the franchise overall selling poorly. It's really nice to see, and it was well received, though it's hard to say if the sales were enough for Nintendo.
- M&L: Superstar Saga + Bowser: Not sure how this ended up, with all the attention on the Switch..  It did well on meta, though

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=g6KSzCsrxVI

..and that's it. We have Pokemon and Mario Party Top 100 around the corner, but the 3DS library is really weak with those as well. We also saw the launch of the n2DS XL, but it's obvious that Nintendo's shifting their focus to the Switch. And that's not a bad thing, since their focus needs to be on the Switch. For late adopters of the Switch, it's nice to see Nintendo support this 6 years old hardware. But for new Switch owners, is this effort worth it? Worth trying to squeeze more sales before ending the 3DS lifeline? People obviously have varying opinions on this, but as a 3DS owner, it makes sense to see FE Echoes and Samus Returns on the 3DS, rather than the Switch. I would argue that Pokemon Ultra Sun/Moon makes sense for the 3DS as well, but I digress. 2017 for the Nintendo 3DS is weak, but completely justified

My overall rating:
TBA/10

I would give an early score, but will like to see the launch of Xenoblade 2 and the supply for the Switch during the Holidays..

I don't know, either a 7 or 8. We got BOTW, a port, a ..... ARMS ..., a 1.5 sequel, and Mario Odyssey.

Breath of the Wild and Odyssey are pretty great, but both of which are more like platforms for more construction. I think they really need sequels, maybe not direct ones but ones that build on what they started.

First of all, Breath of the Wild is a multiplatform game, released simultaneously on both platforms. Sure, development started only for Wii U, but in early 2016, development shifted to accomodate both platforms, and their goals changed. This is like saying Battlefield 1 (just an example) on Xbox one is a port of a ps4.game. Breath of the Wild belongs as much to the switch as it does to the wii U imo. It wasnt solely developed for Wii U and then ported. If that were the case, than the Wii U version would have the gamepad map features first shown like three years ago.

Bet with Intrinsic:

The Switch will outsell 3DS (based on VGchartz numbers), according to me, while Intrinsic thinks the opposite will hold true. One month avatar control for the loser's avatar.

I agree with that, I'm just too lazy to type it.

And what's "Second of all" :-p

Well, I didnt get a proper answer there, so I'll take the win :P

The second thing I forgot to say was, if you were to make splatoon 2, what would you change from the first, and what would you add?

I would say 10. I haven't seen a year like this for ANY game console. And the year isn't even over yet! It has only been 8 months! We have Zelda Breath of the Wild (GOTY Material) Mario Odyssey (GOTY Material), ARMS, Splatoon 2, Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, Pokken Tournament, Fire Emblem Warriors, Xenoblade Chronicles 2, Snipper Clips, 1-2 Switch, Mario + Rabbids Kingdom Battle, Sonic Forces, Super Bomberman R, Doom, Skyrim, L.A. Noire, Rocket League, (among many other 3rd party ports and multiplats) and even when you take away the ports (not bolded) it's still very impressive for 8 months on the market.

Assuming that Nintendo has more titles up its sleeve for January through March 3rd, which we can expect maybe Kirby Star Allies, and Yoshi, this will be one hell of a year for the big N. I'm genuinely excited for what they have to show in 2018 because I know they're just getting started. There have been too many companies/subsidiaries at Nintendo that have gone silent and they must be working on new titles. Also considering that the Handheld and Console divisions have combined, we can theoretically expect 2x the software output on the device which will get it up to par with PS and Xbox who don't really attend to other devices like Nintendo has in the past. If 2017 is anything to go by, 2018 should be a banger.

You didn't get a proper answer? You didn't ask a question! Nothing more to say than I agree with you and I was too lazy to state that, lol.

I would probably create more level gimmicks for multiplayer. I would also have a lot of the new weapon types added in months down the road, there at launch. I'm not passionate enough about Splatoon to think about how I would change it's sequel for hours on end, creativity is hard but I still expected a bit more from the devs, but it did feel a lot like 1 until more updates came out(and even then it has similarities). I should probably play the campaign though, seems like everyone loves that.

OMG, FOR SOME REASON I READ THAT AS DISAGREE LOL. I really need to get my eyes checked out.

And as for what you say about Splatoon, fair enough, I am of the mentality if it aint broken, dont fix it, but I see the point youre trying to make.  And yeah the campaign is wierdly wonderful, I encourage people to check it out.

op: I would give the year an eight. There is the switch, botw, splatoon, mario, and all that stuff, but its not a 10 but there are also duds like 1-2 switch, super mario run, hey pikmin, and...... I would even call ARMS a dud. Sales have already fizzled out for that game.

Can't complain too much.

Besides FE: Warriors, which I dislike more from the say, aesthetic point of view (bland interface, menus and the like) and the roster while being big, manages to be really underwhelming. That aside, ARMS and Splatoon 2 were great. Super Mario Odyssey is one special game that has brought me more smiles to my face than anything else, Breath of the Wild trumps Wind Waker as my favorite Zelda game after 13 years, which also was one fantastic experience. Mario + Rabbids was a big surprise, a great strategy game with a ton of love put into it, plus the good ammount of quality indie games, like Wonder Boy, and some of the bigger third party games, looking forward to Doom this month. It has been a great year.

Only thing left this year first party wise is Xenoblade 2, which I expect to be about as good as the first one or X, RPGs that I enjoy more for its world, characters, stories more so than the gameplay (they are fine, just nothing that I find too engaging) , which applies to the Xeno games I have played.

2018 is great already with Kirby Star Allies.
